Summary: Romilda gets a dose of Bellatrix's wrath.
Completion: Complete

Romilda knew something was seriously wrong before she'd managed to reach consciousness. She couldn't even make it out of bed this morning, despite all her best efforts. But it was getting worse and worse. She was terrified now. Something wasn't right. She couldn't make it out of bed, but her body refused to even put up the effort to get up.

Every day she had tried to eat something, despite spending half her day in the bathroom, her head hung over the sink. At first she had reassured Rodolphus and the elves that it was normal, but after dinner the night before, she let her mind cross to something even more ghastly.

She had taken dinner with Rodolphus, and assured him that it would pass. She had tried to eat a few mouthfuls of everything on her plate, and was glad the food was bland and not too spicy. The pumpkin juice tasted somewhat funny, but then again, everything had tasted funny for days. She had gone to bed straight after dinner, hoping that sleep would come. It didn't, and she ended up moaning and groaning and whimpering as her body was wracked with pains. All night she had called out for Rodolphus, and also for Liam, but her cries must have fallen on deaf ears.

The sun was slipping through the crack in the curtains, when Romilda felt her sweat sodden pillow. She felt as if she was dying. There was no other way to describe the pains that wracked through her clammy body. She was under no illusion that this was any sort of morning sickness now, she moaned loudly at the light that came on as the curtains were opened. Letting out another moan, she called fruitlessly for Rodolphus, wondering if he would ever come.

Another shiver of pain made her cry out as she coughed violently, retching and coughing up blood. Black blood, the coppery tang unmistakeable in her mouth, as she was sure it got into the matted and sweaty strands of hair hanging limply against her head. Looking at the blood on the pillow, blackness began swimming at the corners of her eyes, and she lost consciousness - her last thoughts for Liam, and if she would ever see him again.

Rodolphus leaned back in his chair at his desk in his study and stared out the window, the fingers of one hand tapping rhythmically on the desk. Rather than being miles away, his mind on the woman in the unused wing of the house. Romilda had not looked at all well last night when they'd had dinner together and despite her reassurances that it was normal and would pass, he was concerned.

He had just made up his mind to ask Orla to come and take a look at Romilda when a crack sounded in the room and a house elf appeared. He turned when nothing more happened and raised an eyebrow. The house elf who had come in was shaking and looked frightened.

"What is it, Klotter?" he said impatiently, wondering what in Merlin's name Bella had done now. He knew that Klotter was the elf most loyal to her.

"M... Master Rodolphus, she... Miss Vane... she is ill," Klotter stammered, now looking downright terrified. "She is calling your name and there... there is blood."

Rodolphus leapt to his feet, barely feeling the twinge in his knee. "What?" he demanded then he waved a hand. "Never mind."

He snatched up quill and parchment and scrawled a quick note. he looked up to find that Nicodemus was waiting on the windowsill, having picked up on his mood.

"To Orla Quirke... urgently," he said as he tied the note to the raven's leg.

Nicodemus cawed then leapt out the window. Rodolphus didn't watch him go, instead he apparated straight into Romilda's room. The scent of blood hit him first then the smell of sweat. He hurried over to the bed and swore at the sight of the blood-soaked pillow.

He yanked the bed covers back and gently lifted Romilda out of the bed, carrying her over to the chaise longue. He gently brushed the sweat soaked hair out of her face.

"Klotter!" he barked. "Get me a bowl filled with warm water and a towel."

He heard a crack and a frightened squeak then another crack saw the items he'd asked for appear beside him. He dipped the towel in the bowl and gently wiped the blood away from Romilda's mouth. He then used another section of the towel to clean the sweat from her face.

"Romilda, my dear," he said gently but urgently. "Can you wake up for me? Can you tell me what's wrong?"

Fear gripped him; he might not know that much about the process of pregnancy but he did know that a miscarriage did not usually have a woman coughing up blood, which is what looked like had happened. He could only hope Orla arrived soon.

Romilda coughed and took a deep gasping breath. Someone was talking - saying her name. A moan of pain followed as she moved. Every inch of her body ached and as she managed to open her eyes she saw Rodolphus.

He had finally come, and she offered up what she thought was a smile. "You came," she whispered, the words sending another cough through her.

But from the determined look on Rodolphus' face, she tried to concentrate. "The blood," she whispered. "Can't keep any food down," she said. "...tastes funny."

She looked at him with pleading eyes. "The baby!" Her hand moved to her stomach, where she clutched feebly at her nightshirt. There was no pain there yet, but her stomach felt hollow as she started to shiver. "Please... healer."

Relief shuddered through Rodolphus when Romilda opened her eyes but it was quickly wiped away by her words. The phrase 'tastes funny' stuck in his mind but he put it aside for now. He could consider it later once he was sure Romilda and their baby were alright.

He dropped the towel on the floor and gently covered her hand with his as he brushed her hair with his other hand. "I've sent for a healer, Romilda. She should be here soon. She's very good."

He felt utterly helpless, something that he hadn't felt for years, not since he'd been in Azkaban. And he hated it just as much now as he had then. Romilda... their child... they had to be alright. He couldn't lose a second child.

She clung to Rodolphus, letting his hand brush away the hair from her face as she leaned her head against the soft pillow.

She closed her eyes again, but gently, feeling a few moments of respite from the pain that wracked her body. She relaxed a little at the mention of a healer, and her half delirious mind spoke up. "Anthony?" she asked, her face lighting up in hope.

Another shudder went through her and she began to cough again. She feebly squeezed Rodolphus' hand, glad that it was only a soft cough. She looked up at him. "It wasn't a bad one," she said, trying to stay calm. "Are you mad at me?" she asked, out of the blue, hoping he wasn't going to blame her in all this.

Rodolphus shook his head. "No... not him," he said. "Another healer... one I know. I trust her to heal me. She's very good."

He held his breath as she coughed. She seemed so damn weak and he couldn't imagine that this was anything ordinary.

"No," he said firmly then he kissed her forehead. "No, of course I'm not mad at you. Whatever is wrong, I know it is not your fault."

The question that was running through his mind, underneath his concern and worry, was what had caused this. He suspected Klotter might know from the house elf's reactions. Right now though, his immediate concern was Romilda. Once this was taken care of, he would get his answers and if this had been caused by someone, Merlin help that person.

He glanced up at the window and then towards the door. Where was Orla?

Romilda just nodded, trusting that he would get her a healer who could help her and the baby. Even so, she had really wanted to see Anthony. He'd looked after her in the past and she would trust his medical judgement above anyone else's.

She was relieved to know that he wasn't mad at her, and she believed him. "I tried to eat more and more every day," she said, still in way of apology for not feeling on top of things. "But since we came back from France... I've felt worse."

A shudder of pain ripped through her and she let out an almighty heaving cough. Blood splattered on the chaise lounge, the pillow, and on the towel Rodolphus had dropped.

Romilda cried out as the sharp pain ripped through her and she felt a sudden wetness flowing between her legs. Swooning, she looked down, only to see blood on her nightdress and a massive sob left her mouth. "No!" she whimpered in a feeble cry, sobbing through the pain as she rolled herself up into a little ball, the pain keeping at bay the blackness that swam along the edges of her vision.

"No, no, no, no, no..." she began to chant, wondering where in the hell this healer was as the coughing started again.

Orla had been in surgery when the owl from Roddy had come, so it had taken her a while to get to it. Once she had, she'd immediately made some sort of family related excuse and left. Face cold and her expression grim, she found a spot she could apparate from. Arriving at the spot Roddy had called her to, Orla strode into the room.

Her expression grew even more grim at the site that met her. "What..?" She started a question in a short, sharp, snappish tone but cut it off before she could finish. It probably wouldn't get answered right away. She could see most of the answer for herself. Sharp eyes taking the situation in, Orla gave Roddy a quick glance. "I've only got a short window of time." She warned him as she quickly moved to the woman's side.

The woman was vaguely familiar, but Orla didn't bother with that. She got right to work and brought the bleeding to a stop. In the process, a quick scan had told her the cause of the bleeding and Orla's lips had thinned slightly. As soon as she had the bleeding stopped, Orla stood and turned to face Roddy. "It was a miscarriage." She stated quietly. Too much time was passing. She couldn't afford to be away from the Shack for too much longer.

"I've got to go." She tried to say it as respectfully as possible. Roddy understood the situation. Hopefully. With his consent, she turned and left the room as quickly as possible.

Rodolphus was relieved when Orla arrived and he stepped back to allow her room to work. He knew he'd taken a risk calling her away in the fashion he had and as such he did not object to her terse words and behaviour.

He watched her work and her diagnosis of what had happened hit him like a blow. He schooled his face to impassivity as she finished then nodded when she said she had to go. Once she had left his sagged and despair flowed across his face. Miscarriage. His second child was dead... this one even before it could be born.

He returned to Romilda's side and sat on the edge of the chaise. He gently brushed the hair away from her face and took one of her hands in his. He hardly knew what to say but there was something ominous building in the back of his mind. He set that aside for now... that was something to think about later.

"Romilda?" he said gently, brushing her cheek with the fingers of one hand.

Romilda had heard another voice, a woman's voice - one she thought was somewhat familiar. At least, she'd heard it before - and more than once.

But the pain that ripped through her and the blood was only the beginning. She heard the word miscarriage and she sobbed and wailed. She had no idea of course, if this was real, or of she just wanted to break down and wail, but she felt a tingle of magic through her body and there was a sudden emptiness in her gut.

The baby was gone. She heard her name, and managed to open her eyelids enough to see Rodolphus' face, her hand coming up to feebly clutch at his as she began to sob.

She was dying, she knew that much, and she had lost her child. "I'm sorry," she murmured between sobs, the pain making everything ache even more.

Rodolphus pressed a kiss to Romilda's fingers then continued to caress her face.

"Shh," he said soothingly. "You have nothing to apologise for. It wasn't your fault. You and I both know you were looking after yourself wonderfully well."

He continued to caress her face as he thought quickly. He was concerned that she still needed medical attention, something that he could not offer here. Orla needed to stay in Hogsmeade for his purposes and the witches and wizards who acted as medics in the field hospital weren't trained for this sort of thing.

He could take her to France but he could not ignore the little voice in the back of his head telling him he needed to stay... that he had something to deal with here. Which left him one option.

"Romilda, my dear," he said calmly. "I am going to summon Theodore and have him take you home. You need medical attention that I cannot provide here and I think you should be with your son now."

He waited until he sure that she had understood him then got to his feet, calling Nicodemus to him and summoning parchment and quill. He scrawled a quick note and gave it to Nicodemus to deliver to Theodore.

Theodore,

Come to the manor immediately.

Rodolphus

Romilda let out a whimper as Rodolphus soothed her. She squeezed his fingers again as she squeezed back more tears from her eyes.

At the mention of Theo, a part of her mind ticked over. She wasn't sure he knew about Theo and her, and if he didn't then why was he summoning him, of all people? Surely not Draco? He was his nephew, after all.

She could have protested, told him no - that she wanted to stay with him. The thought of seeing Liam stopped her from that thought, and all she could let out was a feeble nod. "Theo," she murmured softly from her lips. "Home. Liam." She understood completely and looked up as she saw the look on his face. It seemed that a hollowness was there - one that had not been there the day before, and she closed her eyes.

Perhaps it would be better to sleep. She coughed again, and her body ached from top to toe, but she was beyond caring. But now she would be going home, so no, she had to care. Liam needed her, and she had to pull through this. She had one child who still needed her.

Theo had been working when he heard the pecking on the window, seeing Nicodamus made him frown and he hurried to open. His godfather never sent the raven - so why now?

The message could not be misunderstood, however, and he nodded to the bird as he hurried to find Padma, telling her where he'd be before he Apparated to outside the mannor, not even knocking before an elf opened and ushered him inside, showing him to a part of the manor in which he had never been before.

In passing, he noticed through a door, two portraits of Nott family members hanging on the way, and even as they walked briskly to whereever it was Rodolphus wanted him to go, he registered them both, knowing now two portraits to quickly remove from the walls of Nott Manor.

Rodolphus had returned to Romilda's side after sending Nicodemus off with the message for Theo and he continued to soothe her. When he felt someone cross the wards he's set up on this part of the manor, he pressed a kiss against her forehead then another on her lips. He then rose and faced the door, his face drawn and tired.

When his godson walked in, he gave him a brief nod.

"Theodore," he said, his voice utterly expressionless. "Take her home. She has suffered a miscarriage. Orla has stabilised her." He paused then voiced the theory that he hadn't allowed himself to think of before. "But she may have been poisoned."

He turned back to Romilda, leaning over her to kiss her forehead one last time. "Goodbye, my dear."

He then straightened up and apparated out of the room to his favourite courtyard to lick his wounds in private.

Theo had during his walk through the manor tried to figure out what this could possibly be about. Not one of his thoughts had been anywhere close.

'Right,' he answered, knowing it was better to say little than too much. In his mind, the clues started to mount up, miscarriage - that meant she'd been pregnant with Rodolphus's child. Poisioned - and Bellatrix had found out. Stabalised - but still deadly ill.

'I'll take care of her,' he said walking over to Romilda while scanning the room for things to turn into a portkey.

'Romilda?' he said softly, moving over to her even before Rodolphus left the room.

Romilda was mentally crushed. She let out a soft whimper when Rodolphus left her side, and she let her hand reach out for him. A warm kiss to her brow and lips soothed her.

She just wanted to curl up into a little ball and die, but then she heard him talk to Theo, and she tried to open her eyes. There was blackness at the edge of her sight, and she was feeling cold. One hand still clutched at her stomach and she called out to Rodolphus just as she heard a pop of apparition.

"Theo?" she asked, not sure why he was there. She was confused. She had told Rodolphus nothing about them, and yet he was here. She tried to concentrate on that one thought, but found she could not.

Her eyes closed and she let out a deep cough as she unconsciously let her arms slip around his neck. "Home," she managed to say through her delirium, the thought of sleep instead of this pain much more appealing. Perhaps she would wake up, and all of this was a nightmare.

Fuck she was really bad off. Feeling her forehead, Theo could sense her fever as he pulled an ornament off the table and turned it into a portkey.

'Hold on, Romilda. And try not to sleep,' he said, taking her into his arms and putting the portkey to her skin, feeling the tug behind his bellybutton.
