RP: Rescue and Return
Date: August 5, 2005
Characters: Theo, Romilda, Severus, Millicent, Liam and Ella
Location: 10 Harmonia Street
Private/Public: Private
Rating: PG
Warnings:Summary: Theo brings Romy someplace safe
Completion: Complete

As they arrived in the house, Theo hoped the tug of the portkey hadn't made her worse. As she coughed up more blood, he swore, and put her down on the bed in the guest bedroom.

'Mimsy!' He called, putting Romilda down as the elf appeared. 'I need a bezoar, and water, and a cloth, then I need parchment, ink and quill…and Zephyr,' he added as an afterthought.

No doubt Rodolphus would keep track now, he couldn't show him that he was in contact with Snape. And he desperately needed Snape to fix this, because if Orla hadn't been able to do more than temporarily stabilise her… well he needed an antidote to whatever it was she'd been given. And fast.

Fuck, he didn't like it when he couldn't fulfil his promises. Though in all honesty if the stupid bint hadn't tried to get information. He nearly growled.

A pop alerted him to Mimsy's arrival, and he quickly took the bezoar and the water, tilting Romilda's head back as he forced the bezoar down her throat.

'Just swallow, it will allow you to hold on until we can find an antidote,' he said letting her drink, hoping she wouldn't cough it all up again, or slip back into unconsciousness.

Romilda ached all over when she felt the tug of a portkey. Unfortunately, the moment she was still, she coughed hard, tasting more blood. Her hands kept clutching at her stomach and she shook her head at the realisation she had lost her baby. That thought made her want to slip into unconsciousness and not wake.

But then her mind thought to Liam, and the fact she was now here with Theo. She could hear him giving orders to someone - demanding a few things. A bezoar? Part of her mind was clouded, but a sharp memory of the time she was accused of poisoning Ron Weasley came to the fore, and how Harry had saved him with a bezoar. She had been poisoned? Why?

She let out a moaned cry, as the pain was still coursing through her body. The fact that she wasn't with Rodolphus any more was still being processed.

Feeling cool water slip past her lips, she coughed a little. A hard stone slipped down her throat, and she felt as if she was choking on a peach pit. But as she drank, she heard Theo's encouragement, and knew she had to hang on for the sake of her son. She had lost the baby, but the thought of her son losing her kept her hanging on the edge.

The blackness still swam at the corners of her eyes, but she took a deep breath. It hurt like hell, but she kept going. "Liam..." she murmured again, wanting to see her son. "Where is he?"

'Shh,' Theo said, his voice softer than normally when he talked to Romilda. 'Don't speak, just focus on staying awake. Liam is fine, he's with Millicent, I made sure of it,' he reassured her, taking the cloth and dabbing her forehead as he had done to Verity so many times when she'd ended up in fever from her father's abuse.

He felt little or no pity for Romilda's stupidity, but he did feel a responsibility, and this was something he knew to do only too well.

Romilda nodded, suddenly now realising where she was, and that Theo was asking her to do something. Even now, she had the unconscious urge to obey him.

Confirming that Liam was with Millicent, she nodded again and let that worry rest. Theo had promised he would protect her son, and her, and he had come through. Liam was with family, and she hoped Miles hadn't corrupted him too much. The pain that wracked through her stomach happened again, and she shuddered into a tight little ball. The pain across her stomach made her wince, and she started to sob for the loss of her child. "My baby... my baby..."

The pain wasn't quite so bad now, and Theo was there. He would protect her - he had promised.

Theo hushed her again, shaking his head at the idiocy of getting pregnant by Rodolphus, but he said nothing, just dabbed her forehead with the cloth until she seemed to settle down.

'Mimsy,' he said softly, and the elf who had been waiting behind him immediately came up to them.

'Romilda, this is Mimsy, she's going to take care of you while I write a couple of letters,' he said, waiting for her to respond.

Romilda took a deep breath, trying not to shed tears. Slowly she tried to get her breathing into a rhythm as Theo hushed her and dabbed at her forehead. The pain and emptiness were still there, but the ever present urge to throw up was slowly abating. That in itself made her feel much better.

At the mention of her name, she opened her eyes. She saw an elf there, as Theo was going to write letters. She bit her lip, wanting to feel a human touch against her, but she simply nodded as the elf took over dabbing at her forehead. She gave the elf a thankful look as she watched Theo move over to a writing table not far away. She closed her eyes, trying not to cry for what was lost.

Moving over to the table where Mimsy had set the parchment and ink, Theo quickly penned two letters, adding portkeys to them both before sealing them and giving one to Zephyr, while taking one himself.
'Go fast,' he told the bird, sending him off before he returned to Romilda and Mimsy.

'Mimsy go arrange something she could eat, some soup, then deliver this letter to Millicent Bulstrode. Apparate straight into her house, and then straight here. Don't let anyone see you,' he instructed, before taking over dabbing her forehead.

'Keep awake, Romilda, don't fall asleep,' he told her.

Severus,

Someone has been poisoned and your help is needed to figure out with what and to get an antidote. A healer has been able to do nothing more than stabilise her, and a bezoar is helping to keep her alive for now.

I know you have no reason to trust me, but I give my word this is true. The address is 10 Harmonia Street, but I'd prefer it if you used the enclosed portkey. Time is important.

Regards,
Theo

*****

Millicent,

Romilda is back, but injured. Come to the house on 10 Harmonia Street, the portkey will bring you there.

Theo

Severus looked up when the owl flew into his workroom and scowled. He took the letter with a growl, a noise he repeated when he read it. When in Merlin's name had Theo been up to now? He tossed the portkey on the bench long with the letter. He did not trust portkeys made by anyone other than himself, Minerva or Draco. Harmonia Street wasn't that far away and he could move very quickly when he wanted to. It was also on the edge of town so that reduced the risk as well.

Even as he'd been making this decision, he'd been moving towards his potions cabinet. He opened it and pulled out the chest of antidotes he kept on hand.

"Titchy!" he barked as he summoned his cloak and threw it around his shoulders.

The house elf popped into the room and bowed.

"I need you to listen out for me," Severus said before Titchy could say anything. "I may need things brought to me."

"Of course, Master Severus," Titchy said with another bow.

Severus ran out of the room, pulling the hood of his cloak up and Disillusioning himself as he went. He ducked out of the castle through one of the side entrances then ran down towards the town. Once past the Shrieking Shack, he slowed slightly to ensure he wasn't seen. Thankfully that part of the village was quiet right now and it wasn't long before he was knocking on the door of number 10.

Titchy popped back into the room just after Theo's elf. Severus ignored everything in favour of commandeering a corner of the room. A flick of his wand transformed a section of the carpet to stone and Titchy immediately began setting the cauldron up, lighting a fire and pouring in the base Severus had asked for before hunkering down nearby in case anything else was needed.

Severus turned and eyed Romilda with a practiced eye. "Yes, if she thinks she can keep it down. That bezoar needs to stay right where it is."

"And poisoned is something of a mild term," he said grimly as he levitated the table in the room over to one side of the cauldron and began chopping and slicing ingredients quickly but precisely. "And next time, stay away from Rodolphus Lestrange. I am well aware that he capable of charming the little birds from the trees but always remember what he is... dangerous and insane. With an equally dangerous and insane wife."

Romilda was starting to breathe a little easier. The pain was still there, but she could manage breath without too much trouble. There was some warmth coming back into her legs.

She looked up when Professor Snape started talking to her, and she realised that he was chastising her. Poison? The realisation was starting to set in. She knew Rodolphus had wanted the baby, but then when the Professor mentioned Bellatrix, her sense of righteous anger flared. "She killed my baby," she said forcefully, her nostrils managing to flare. They could say all they wanted about Rodolphus, she had seen a side of him nobody had. But Bellatrix had killed their child.

The realisation washed over her and she realised that it would have been better if she had kept the child from Rodolphus. But all that was for nothing now, and a melancholy started to wash over her.

Romilda tried to sit up as the Professor sliced and chopped. The movement was too much and she just lay there with her thoughts. "How bad?" she asked the professor, glancing at Theo as she spoke.

Severus snorted derisively as he added the first of the ingredients to the cauldrons and began slowly stirring. "Of course she did. You were a threat. At least in her insane mind you were. Rodolphus was a fool not to set her mind at ease. He's not going to replace Bellatrix with you or any other woman."

He glanced over at Romilda briefly then snorted again. "Not that you're really Rodolphus' type. I suspect that you don't exactly share his proclivities in the bedroom. Bella does which is why she's his wife."

He paused and concentrated on the potion he was brewing for a moment, waiting for it to change colour. The moment it did he added the next ingredient.

"As for how bad..." He scowled. "She didn't use a potion, she used three plant extracts, which is why I am having to brew a specific antidote. She seems to have used a combination of clove oil, feverfew and pennyroyal. That last one is why you miscarried. It's an abortifacient. The potion I have given you, along with the bezoar, will hold you for now."

Taking the food from Mimsy with a thank you and a reminder of the letter, Theo moved over to Romilda's side, rolling his eyes at her words.

'Bad enough for you to die unless you get the right antidote,' he said honestly. This wasn't the right time to sugar coat things.

'Do you think you can manage to hold some soup down?' he then asked, refraining from a whole line of scolding he had in mind for her stupidity. He could scold her when she was more herself.

Romilda heard all their chastisements, and had she been at full health, she might have snapped back. But the fact that Bellatrix Lestrange had poisoned her... The reality was slowly sinking in, and she closed her eyes.

The professor explained the herbs that had been given to her, and just as she remembered from lessons at school, the severity of what could happen had sunk in. At the mention of the herb specifically designed to kill the baby, she bit her lip. "So she wanted to kill me too." She said it to herself more than asked, realising that some of those herbs were not meant for the child.

She could sense the displeasure in Theo's voice, knowing that if she made it through this, she was going to have more than an earful. She didn't think any message could be quite as harsh as knowing that Bellatrix wanted her dead, and had succeeded only in killing her child. A part of her wanted to reach out and ask for Rodolphus - it was his child as well - but she was lucid enough to know better than that.

She turned to Theo at his question about food. The thought of anything still made her ill, but then she knew this wasn't poisoned. Nodding feebly, she sat up slowly against the pillow. The shrill chopping of the professor's knife went through her head, but she concentrated on the spoon in front of her.

It was a bland broth, but warm, and it made her cough after a couple of mouthfuls. Even so, she felt ravenous. She was well aware she needed to take it slowly.

She knew she had to explain things from the beginning. "It was all a mistake," she said quietly as she slowly ate her soup. "I only went to him to tell him I was pregnant, and then I overheard a plan to..." she looked up at the professor. "He wants to get someone into Hogwarts to get you," she said, calmly, without an ounce of emotion.

"He felt it best I stay under his protection until the baby was born," at the mention of that, she dropped her spoon and tried hard not to burst into tears. Rodolphus had promised her protection, but he couldn't. He had failed, and she nearly died.

She gave Theo a look that showed she was well aware of how very, very sorry she was for it all.

Severus glanced at Romilda briefly. She wasn't exactly doing anything to raise his opinion of Gryffindors. "Of course she did," he said harshly. "Rodolphus is her husband. I don't profess to understand anything about their twisted relationship but she doesn't stay because she finds him convenient. He is hers, she is his, never forget that."

He was tempted to tell her that getting pregnant to Rodolphus was her first mistake but he suspected there would be people she was more likely to listen to who would be telling her that more than a few times in the near future.

He snorted derisively. "I'm sure he does," he said dismissively. "I've annoyed him thoroughly. He wants to torture me, interrogate me and then turn me over to Bella for her entertainment. That is the man you got involved with, no matter what act he played for your benefit."

He turned his full attention back to the potion he was brewing. She was a fool and was no doubt harbouring some kind of romantic notions about Rodolphus for some idiotic reason.

Liam's eyes grew really wide when Mr Theo said that a bad pirate had hurt her. He nodded gravely, understanding that Mummy was really sick. He looked over to Ella and gave her the same grave look, squeezing her hand as he did so. There was a strange look on 'Cent's face, and he hoped she was going to let them see Mummy.

He nodded back at Mr Theo again. "I und'stand," he replied. "I'll be very, very good." Mr Theo said she was going to be better, so he trusted him. He wanted to climb the stairs a few at a time, but he hung back behind Mr Theo's legs, as he waited as patiently as he could for them to climb the stairs.

They entered a room and he immediately scrunched his nose at the smell. "Where's Mummy?" he said in a whisper before hearing his name.

"Mummy!" he said softly, taking the last few steps and stopping only when he got to the edge of the bed.

Romilda heard the door open and looked up. She saw Theo return, but then a moment later a small man stuck his head out from behind her legs, and she almost burst into fresh tears. Holding out her arms, she called to her son, "Oh Liam," she cried, her arms held out wide.

He had grown so much. When he stopped just before the bed, she tried to pull him into a hug. "It's all right, darling. You can't hurt me. Mummy's going to be just fine."

She did burst out into fresh tears of joy, kissing him on the forehead and cupping his face in her hands. "You've grown so much and Mummy is very sad she wasn't there to see you." That was an understatement. "I hope you've been a good boy for Rosie and Millicent," she said quietly. As she hugged Liam to her chest again, she mouthed a 'thank you' to Theo before she saw that Millicent and Ella were there too.

Millicent had hardly believed the letter she received from the elf. Romilda back. She couldn't get to Theo's house soon enough, and when she was there, she could hardly speak. Instead she watched as Liam talked to Theo (who responded much better than she'd expected to a child) and followed as they walked upstairs.

When she saw Romilda lying there, and then Snape deeply concentrated in brewing something, the reality of the situation dawned on her. Holding Ella back, she walked over to the bed. 'Hey there,' she said, watching as Liam hugged her, relieved they were finally together again.

'Professor,' she nodded towards Snape, wanting to ask how bad it was but not daring to in front of the children.

Romilda saw her friend, and gave Millicent's hand a squeeze as she tried to show her abject apology in her eyes. "Thank you for taking care of him," she said, knowing that she had a hell of a lot more to say to Millicent in the way of thanks. "He's grown so big."

She gave Ella a big smile and put a hand on her curls. "Hop down, now, Liam," she said as she saw the Professor looking on in displeasure. "I have to take my medicine. But you'll have to go and stay with Millicent for a while longer," she said. "Can you do that for me?"

Liam said little, and just nodded. Normally he was much more vocal, and she was worried that he had changed. She couldn't contemplate the idea of Miles being the one to change him, and she brushed her thumb across his cheek.

Severus quickly strained the potion through a piece of fine muslin and grimaced. That had to have been one of the quickest and ugliest brewing jobs he'd ever done but since he didn't know precisely how much of the plant extracts Romilda had consumed and for how long, he decided that speed was more important than artistry. The antidote would work, that was the important thing.

He poured the potion into a goblet that Titchy handed to him then turned and scowled. The results of this potion were not going to be pleasant. The plant extracts would be purged from Romilda's body but the blood that had gathered in her lungs and stomach would also be purged.

"Bulstrode, get those children out of here," he snapped then he glared at Theo. "Send that house elf of yours for a basin."

Millicent looked at her friend, smiling as she squeezed her hand. 'No trouble, you know I love him,' she said softly, taking Liam into her arms as Romilda told him to get off the bed.

When Snape told her to get the children out, she nodded, squeezed Romilda's hand once more and took Ella's hand to leave. She couldn't help to be grateful for the fact that it was Snape that would make sure she was alright.

After leaving Romilda to sleep, Theo made it downstairs to where the children were having ice-cream while being spoilt possibly rotten by Mimsy. He grinned, though was slightly suprised when two sticky children with not so clean hands ran up to him and threw themselves around his legs.

He frowned inwardly, but didn't let it show as he rubbed both children on the backs, while telling them to finish their ice-creams in the garden while he talked to Millicent.

Watching them run off he cast a cleaning spell on his robes, told Mimsy to keep an eye on them and turned to Millicent.

'Do they always...hug... so much??' he asked, wondering if that was really normal.

Millicent fought back a laugh as she saw Liam and Ella get ice-cream all over Theo's robes, but she lost her control when he asked her if they always hugged.

'Not always,' she said amused. 'But I think they have decided you deserve a few for finding Romilda.'

'And I know you said not to say it, but thank you anyway.'

She paused, looking at him, still worried about what she saw in that room. 'What happened to her?' she finally asked.

He brushed away her thank you, though the explaination for why the kids insisted on hugging him made sense he guessed. At Millicent's question, however, he refocused.

'She...she thought she could lure information off Rodolphus Lestrange, and ended up pregnant instead,' he said ignoring Millicent's gasp. 'Apparantly she did overhear some sensitive information when she went to tell him about the pregnancy, and decided to not let her leave. Bella, however, seemed...less than pleased with the pregnancy.'

He didn't need to say anymore, knowing that Millicent would understand the rest.

She couldn't help not to gasp as Theo told her what Romilda had done, how stupid she'd been, and suddenly Draco's words filtered back to her...she'd been so sure he was wrong.

Wondering how in Merlin's name Romilda could have been so stupid, she held her head in her hands, still more worried than angry. 'Bellatrix poisioned her?' she said finally, understanding all too well what happened if you crossed that woman.

'I take it the child is dead?' It was more a hope than a question, though, because as much as she knew it would hurt Romilda, the mere thought of her having Rodolphus' child...she shivered. It was best for all concerned if she didn't.

And that's when another thought hit her - Liam! When this became public, when there was no more doubt as to Draco being right about this - and she'd gone and argued with him and now he would probably not care that he'd promised her that Miles wouldn't take Liam away from her and he might just - oh fuck!

'She can lose Liam over this, can't she?' she asked in fear.
