Characters: Rodolphus Lestrange, Rabastan Lestrange, Adrian Pucey
Private/Public: Private
Rating: PG
Warnings: None
Summary: Rodolphus comes to some conclusions and makes some decisions.
Completion: Complete

Rodolphus rose to his feet in the courtyard, his expression cold and calm. He’d spent a great deal of time in the courtyard over the last few days, first brooding and mourning and then finally feeling angry. He was grateful for the anger, for it had brought clarity to his thinking. He was angry with Bella but he knew that would eventually pass given time. Mostly he was angry with himself for allowing his obsession with an heir to dominate his thoughts so much over the last few weeks.

Well, there would be no more of that. It seemed fate had made its decision and he would no longer question it. He was the leader of the Death Eaters and as such he had a goal. That goal would be his focus and nothing would stop him from achieving it. He had let things slide of late. That would end.

His first thought was to his overall plan. He had not made a move since the retrieval of Lord Voldemort’s belongings from Glastonbury Tor. That would change. He would not allow the Light to become complacent. He had an idea for what could be done and he would send Rab and Lisa to take care of it.

The second item on his agenda was Severus. His people had had enough time to cover their tracks should Severus’ list come out and that was assuming that Severus wasn’t playing a very large game of bluff. Either way, he wanted Severus and who better than the man who had captured him last time? Oh, it was true Severus would be on the alert for Adrian but Adrian was not a stupid man despite the act he put on for Bella and if he didn’t understand the concept of ambush and traps then he would soon learn.

His third problem was Romilda. He’d been a fool to let the girl go and he could give no other explanation than shock interfering with his thought processes. An explanation he disliked because of its sheer emotionalism but he’d never hesitated to face his flaws in the past, he would not start now. Thankfully the girl had very little information to offer the Aurors or the Order; only the possibility of an attack.

He smiled coldly. No doubt she had told people about that by now but he could use that. He anticipated two reactions. The first would be the assumption that he would abandon the plan now that the Light knew of it and the second would be tightening of security around the castle just in case he hadn’t. A few judicious hints dropped in the appropriate ears... or in other words, Theodore... would easily create the impression that he intended to go ahead with the plan but had merely delayed it to let the Light relax. Those same hints would indicate that it was to be a full Death Eater attack. The reality, of course, would be much different.

As for Romilda herself... he had been the fool that created that problem. He would be the one to solve it. He would need a little time to streamline and perfect the plan that he had in mind but in the end she would be dealt with. He would not palm the responsibility for this off to someone else.

As for the other matters...

He strode back into the manor and up to his study. Once there he summoned a house elf. One appeared promptly with a terrified expression on its face, something which he ignored.

"Find my brother and tell him that I wish to speak to him as soon as possible," he ordered sharply. "You’ll quite likely find him at Lisa Turpin’s house if he is not in the manor."

The house elf bowed and disappeared with a crack, a look of sheer relief on its face. Rodolphus then sat down at his desk and wrote a short note, sending it off with Nicodemus with the knowledge that Adrian would understand that ‘as soon as possible’ meant ‘now’.

Adrian,

Please come and see me as soon as possible.

Regards,
Rodolphus Lestrange

Adrian was in the suite when he got the owl, sent on from the house by Floot. He knew it had to be either Stephen's family or Rodolphus and judging from the malevolent-looking raven which was eyeing him, he was pretty sure it was the latter.

Walking towards the writing desk and feeling glad that Stephen had decided to stay on the beach, he quickly penned a note to him before making a Portkey to just outside the perimeter of Upper Slaughter and Apparating in from there.

Wifey,

Work called. I'll be back soon.

Adrian

Walking up to Lestrange Manor, he knocked on the door and waited for a house elf to show him up to Rodolphus' study, already knowing what the summons was for thanks to Malfoy. He just wondered how long it would be before Stephen's name was mentioned in the conversation; it was already inevitable that it would be.

Rodolphus looked up when someone knocked on the door and put aside one of the reports that had come in during the week that he'd finally gotten around to reading.

"Come in," he called, leaning back in his chair, a cool, calculating look on his face. He just hoped Adrian would not be difficult. He was in no mood for difficult.

Adrian cleared all of the emotions off of his face, knowing that any giveaway wouldn't serve him well. He was still hoping that Rodolphus could be persuaded to use someone - anyone - else; as Malfoy knew about his uncle's plans for him, it was a given that Snape also knew.

He also didn't think Snape would be as amenable about letting himself be captured as last time.

Neither made Adrian's job any easier.

"Good afternoon," he said as he walked in, taking a seat on the other side of Rodolphus' desk. "Your message said soon and I figured that there was no time like the present. I hope everything's well?" he asked, knowing there was no way in hell that it was.

"Good afternoon," Rodolphus said with chill politeness. "I am pleased with your promptness."

He ignored the question and moved on to what he wanted. "I have a task for you. Since you did such an exemplary job last time, I want you to repeat that effort and recapture Severus for me."

He paused and steepled his fingers. "I understand that there will be difficulties since Severus is a formidable man. As such I will not give you a deadline. However I do not expect to wait forever."

Adrian feigned slight surprise for appearance's sake; it wouldn't do for Rodolphus to know that he'd been informed of his new task already. He still didn't know how his illustrious leader expected him to get near Snape; it wasn't as if his Head of house and Potions teacher didn't know him by sight.

"I... Appreciate your choice but why me? He's not going to let me anywhere near him," he said, frankly. "You have others just as capable as myself, more so in some cases; I can't understand why you wouldn't want to use them."

He didn't say anything else for the moment, hoping like hell that he hadn't triggered Rodolphus's temper.

Rodolphus smiled, a chill, unpleasant sight. "Because you are resourceful and intelligent... or you would not have survived in the wider community while still working for me."

The smile disappeared, leaving just the cold expression. "There are other ways to capture the man than simply dueling him. Find a way to lure him into a trap, ambush him, I don't care. Bringing him to me is your responsibility and as long as he is able to answer questions, I don't particularly care what condition he is in."

He arched an eyebrow at Adrian, his expression not inviting any further discussion.

Adrian turned wary as soon as he saw that smile for it only ever meant two things: that Rodolphus was happy or that he was about to something terrible. The two were often interlinked in his opinion.

"Fine," he replied, not knowing what else to say. He could feel himself getting angry and knew he had to get out of there; to piss off the leader of the Death Eaters wouldn't win him any popularity contests. Nor beauty contests if Rodolphus realised and hexed him appropriately. "I'll have him as soon as I can do, in that state as much as possible."

How he was going to achieve that was another issue entirely but he could think on that later.

"Is there anything else?" he asked, wanting to keep the meeting short.

"Good," Rodolphus said with cold satisfaction, pleased that Adrian had not forced him to issue threats so soon.

"No, that was all," he said, picking up the report he'd been reading, effectively dismissing Adrian.

Adrian watched Rodolphus pick up the report and turned before Rodolphus could see his face, internally seething. The last thing he wanted to bloody do was be stuck between a rock and a hard place but it seemed as if that was what was going to happen; if he captured Snape then he'd be killed by Malfoy and possibly others, if he didn't then Merlin only knew what would happen to him.

And Stephen.

Adrian really didn't expect him to honour any promise about him.

Scowling as he left the manor, it was barely two minutes before he was back in Capri, hoping he'd be out of his vile temper before Stephen got back.

Life, Adrian had decided, was a bitch.

Rab was lying on his back, Lisa curled beside him. Her head was on his chest and her hand was tracing light circles on his abdomen. He smiled and kissed her head, having a good idea of where this was going.

The sound of a house elf appearing made him growl. "What is it!" He listened as the elf nervously told him that Rodolphus wanted to see him right away. He raised an eyebrow as the elf disappeared, kissing Lisa as he got out of bed.

"I expect to see you in the same place when I get back," he said as he dressed. Lisa gave a wicked look and licked her lips as he smiled and Apparated to the Manor.

He appeared in his room, grabbing a couple of things before heading down to the study. He opened the doors and looked inside, becoming very serious at the look on his brother's face. He stepped in and closed the doors and stepped to the desk. "Brother."

Rodolphus looked up as Rabastan walked into his study, his expression easing a little but still remaining cold and calm.

"Ah, Rab... good, you're here," he said, putting the report he was reading down. "I have a couple of things I need to speak with you about."

He waited until his brother had sat down then leaned back in his chair.

"First, it has occurred to me that we have been too lax between our large attacks. We have been allowing the wizarding community to relax and become complacent. I wish to change that."

He smiled, a cold, calculating thing. "And Theodore has raised a matter that you and I must talk about as well since I believe one of our Death Eaters may be contemplating straying."

Rab took a seat, listening. He really wanted a drink, but he wanted to have a clear head for this.

At the first, he smiled. "I agree. There is too much time between attacks. Fenrir and I have been discussing a nice run for us, Lisa and Natasha to go on, but that is not until the end of the month. I assume you wanted something to happen sooner?"

At the second, Rab scowled. "Straying? Some just do not understand the penalty for that," he growled, sliding a large knife from its sheath and checking the edge.

Rodolphus shook his head slightly. "My fault. I have been.... obsessing over things that I should not have been." It was the only reference he was willing to make to Romilda and he quickly moved on.

A chill smile grew on his face. "I am sure the four of you will enjoy yourselves. But yes, I have a few ideas for some more regular... events. And I think we will want to start with something... interesting."

He stared out the window for a moment before looking back at his brother. "I would like you to find a Light-aligned or even a neutral pureblood family. One that has not gone to Hogsmeade. I know there are a few around. I would like you to try and... convince them to join our side. If they refuse, kill them... but ensure that you leave one alive to report."

"Such a thing will have two effects," he continued. "It will make the pureblood families start to think about their allegiances. And it will drive the Light-aligned families to Hogsmeade. I like the idea of having all my targets in one convenient place."

He chuckled coldly. "Oh, no need for such enthusiasm just yet. I have only suspicions for now. I think that we must handle this circumspectly and subtly. Remind him where his loyalties lie and the risk he takes by betraying those loyalties, not only to himself but to his family."

Rab's smile matched the one Rodolphus was showing. The chance to get out and cause some havoc was very stimulating. And to do it with Lisa would be arousing, since he could see her use more of her torture methods at work.

"Light-aligned pureblood..." He thought for a moment, then remembered. "Ahh yes... I believe there is a family that will do just fine. They have always resisted our ways. In fact... the chance I could convince them will be small... yet it will serve your purpose very well."

He frowned as he sheathed the knife. "A shame. But if you only suspect, then I shall have to wait... as much as I hate to," he said with a chuckle, knowing he could show patience better than most. "May I ask who exactly it is you suspect?"

"Good," Rodolphus said with cool satisfaction. "Then I shall leave that matter in your hands. There is no need to rush so plan well and carefully. I would rather that you weren't interrupted."

He smiled slightly, knowing his brother possessed a great deal of patience when he wanted to be that way.

"Damian Montague," he said. "He has become involved in a scheme Theodore has been cooking up. You know of my suspicions regarding my godson's loyalties but since they do not harm us and are occasionally useful, I feel no need to challenge him and force his hand. Montague, on the other hand, requires no such leeway. And he has parents, a brother and shortly a new wife to act as... incentive for good behaviour."

Rab smiled at his brother. "Planning has actually been done. I always have a few prepared in case you were to call on me like this. How soon do you want this done."

At the mention of the name, he shook his head.

"Ahhh... him," he said, "Yes, I've had a very dealings with him. He was not on the battlefield during our little raid last time. But he did redeem him afterward, by sending the notice to our contact at The Shack just before the rescue. He was a small, yet key role, to that success."

He paced the floor, tapping his wand on the side of his face. "A scheme of Theo's? Interesting... are you sure that he is not in fact testing Montague? He is known for that." At the mention of a wife, he perked up. "Yes, one of my sources told me of that. He's marrying... what is her name... O'Shea? Very pretty... would be a shame if something happened to her..."

Rodolphus gave a small smile of satisfaction and approval. "Good." He paused for a moment. "This weekend, I think. Perhaps Sunday... the traditional day of rest, especially after a wedding. A good day to remind everyone of the realities of life."

He leaned back in his chair and watched his brother pace.

"He could be testing him. That is why I wish to move circumspectly on this. We will have to determine what it is that is going on before making any moves." He chuckled. "Oh yes, she is very pretty. And I believe Montague has a brother... Julian is his name... that he is fond of. I do so hate family tragedies."

"Oh, before I forget," he said. "Theodore's little scheme is to restart the banking industry. I have given my support but we will need to look at infiltrating all levels of the bank when it is started. Theodore has spoken of having people on the board and that will happen but he has forgotten that a bank is more than its board. We will get far more interesting results by corrupting, bribing and otherwise infiltrating the lower echelons. It is always easier to get what you want by manipulating those doing the actual work."

Rab considered everything. "Restarting it, eh? You remember I wasn't too fond of that plan to destroy Gringotts, but I have to admit it was effective. What's made you decide on this action, other than the fact Theo is knee deep in it?"

He finally relented and went to the bar, pouring them each a strong drink. "But I do agree that infiltration is the best course of action. I assume you have a plan in mind for that?"

He turned back to other things. "Ah yes... I remember hearing about Julian. Well kept, handsome... my Lisa would have a lot of fun with him," he laughed wickedly.

"I know you weren't," Rodolphus said with a rasied eyebrow. "As for why reverse that decision now? I'll admit I almost refused Theodore but then it occurred to me that if we can infiltrate the bank he creates then we will get the best of both worlds. The bank will already be there, established and ready when we win, with our people ready to take control. We will also be able to monitor what the Order, Aurors and Odgen's people are spending their money on. It may be useful information."

He paused. "And on that subject, I do not intend to put all of our money into the bank. Simply that which we use for the day to day running of the manor and the village. The money for bribes and our other ventures will stay where it is. I can only assume the Order and Aurors will try to monitor our spending. Let them only see the boring and mundane, not the reality."

He frowned slightly. "Not a concrete plan, no. Not yet. I will wait and see what Theodore's plan is and who is likely to be on the board. We can then see what positions are open for us to either place our own people there or manipulate those who are hired."

Rab nodded. "Very logical. And devious, as is your forte. I like your idea... we should keep the 'important' things out of sight. Let them wonder about the rest of it."

He laughed as he handed Rodolphus his drink. "Speaking of plans... Fenrir mentioned you had something in mind for the full moon in September. May I ask what you have in mind?"

"Why, thank you, brother," Rodolphus said with a nod. "They will no doubt suspect that we are playing them but the European banks are far more strict about security so we are better off staying them for the the important things."

He took the drink from Rabastan with a nod of thanks. He gave a chill smile when Rab mentioned the September full moon.

"I do," he said, taking a sip of his whiskey. "I haven't finalised much yet but I am planning something rather spectacular in London. The full moon is on a Friday night that month so I was thinking of setting the pack loose in a heavily populated area of London with the rest of the Death Eaters there to drive the Muggles into the jaws of the pack."

He smiled cruelly. "And I was thinking, as a centrepiece, of Fenrir turning Natasha. I believe he could convince her to act the Muggle for just one night. Let the crowd see what looks like one of their own being attacked by something out of a nightmare." He chuckled maliciously. "An attack of that size will be almost impossible for the Aurors to clean up afterwards. Far too many people for them to contain and obliviate."

[info]bd_rabastan

Rab laughed manically. "Excellent! I love it already. The Aurors will never get it contained. And having Fenrir turn Natasha in the middle of it all... even better." He was almost salivating at the thought of the killing of all those Muggles... and how the advantage the Aurors had would be destroyed.

He tossed back his drink, clasping his brother on the shoulder. "Do let me know if you need any assistance with this plan. You know how much I like being in the middle of so much death and destruction."

"I thought you might like it," Rodolphus said with cruel amusement. "I know Fenrir will when I tell him."

"Thank you," he said with a nod. "Largely it is a matter of finding the best place and working out the details of where our Death Eaters are to be. I am thinking that Fenrir can gather his wolves in the middle of a large square or some such place and change right there. Let the Muggles see the horror from the very beginning."

"If I place a Death Eater with them then they can signal the rest to start to herd to Muggles towards the pack." He paused and thought for a moment. "That may be a role I should take for myself. I know the pack recognise me as their ultimate leader due to Fenrir's behaviour. Even in their bloodlust that should hold. I would not care to have one of my Death Eaters tron apart because they were mistaken for a Muggle."

Rab considered for a few moments. "I will put a couple of my men on it. I have two that have no problem being among Muggles as long as it is for purposes such as this. They can get me maps as well as surveillance of the areas that could work best for this."

He chuckled. "As far as not being ripped apart... perhaps we should bring out the old masks we used. It would definitely set us apart from those Muggles."

"Good. Thank you," Rodolphus said with a nod. "I especially like the idea of using one of the main areas for Muggle entertainment. Somewhere near theatres, clubs and the like. Attack when they're out having a good time."

He raised an eyebrow as he thought about that. "Why not?" he said with a snort. "We used the Dark Mark last time. Using the masks and robes this time will likely raise some questions on the other side about what we're truly planning."

Not that he intended to go back to using Lord Voldemort's plans. He'd been too obsessed with Harry Potter instead of keeping his eye on the main game.

Rab chuckled at the thought. "If anything, it will bring back nightmares for those who have seen them before. Let them tremble in fear... it will be their undoing."

He finished his drink and set the glass aside. "Is there anything further? I am very eager to return to Lisa and tell her all this. She will be quite excited."

"No, I think that is all for now," Rodolphus said calmly. "Though I will let you know that I may be away at some point in the next week or two. It is nothing urgent, just a small matter I need to take care of myself. I probably won't be gone for more than a few hours."

"Let me know the outcome of your attack," he said as Rab headed for the door then he chuckled. "And don't forget to leave one of them alive."

Rab nodded. "Very well. Do let me know when you leave, though. I don;t want to leave anything to chance."

He turned as he reached the door, laughing. "That will be the most difficult part. But I'm sure Lisa and I can manage." Rodolphus nodded as Rab took his leave, heading back to Lisa's house, and much to tell her.

When he arrived back, he was disappointed to find she was not in her bed. Growling, he walked over and saw a light in the bathroom. He stepped over and peeked inside, smiling when he saw Lisa in the bathtub, surrounded by bubbles. She lifted a leg out of the water and gave him a smile. Rab returned the smiled as he stepped in and closed the door.
