Rodolphus rose to his feet in the courtyard, his expression cold and calm. He’d spent a great deal of time in the courtyard over the last few days, first brooding and mourning and then finally feeling angry. He was grateful for the anger, for it had brought clarity to his thinking. He was angry with Bella but he knew that would eventually pass given time. Mostly he was angry with himself for allowing his obsession with an heir to dominate his thoughts so much over the last few weeks.
Well, there would be no more of that. It seemed fate had made its decision and he would no longer question it. He was the leader of the Death Eaters and as such he had a goal. That goal would be his focus and nothing would stop him from achieving it. He had let things slide of late. That would end.
His first thought was to his overall plan. He had not made a move since the retrieval of Lord Voldemort’s belongings from Glastonbury Tor. That would change. He would not allow the Light to become complacent. He had an idea for what could be done and he would send Rab and Lisa to take care of it.
The second item on his agenda was Severus. His people had had enough time to cover their tracks should Severus’ list come out and that was assuming that Severus wasn’t playing a very large game of bluff. Either way, he wanted Severus and who better than the man who had captured him last time? Oh, it was true Severus would be on the alert for Adrian but Adrian was not a stupid man despite the act he put on for Bella and if he didn’t understand the concept of ambush and traps then he would soon learn.
His third problem was Romilda. He’d been a fool to let the girl go and he could give no other explanation than shock interfering with his thought processes. An explanation he disliked because of its sheer emotionalism but he’d never hesitated to face his flaws in the past, he would not start now. Thankfully the girl had very little information to offer the Aurors or the Order; only the possibility of an attack.
He smiled coldly. No doubt she had told people about that by now but he could use that. He anticipated two reactions. The first would be the assumption that he would abandon the plan now that the Light knew of it and the second would be tightening of security around the castle just in case he hadn’t. A few judicious hints dropped in the appropriate ears... or in other words, Theodore... would easily create the impression that he intended to go ahead with the plan but had merely delayed it to let the Light relax. Those same hints would indicate that it was to be a full Death Eater attack. The reality, of course, would be much different.
As for Romilda herself... he had been the fool that created that problem. He would be the one to solve it. He would need a little time to streamline and perfect the plan that he had in mind but in the end she would be dealt with. He would not palm the responsibility for this off to someone else.
As for the other matters...
He strode back into the manor and up to his study. Once there he summoned a house elf. One appeared promptly with a terrified expression on its face, something which he ignored.
"Find my brother and tell him that I wish to speak to him as soon as possible," he ordered sharply. "You’ll quite likely find him at Lisa Turpin’s house if he is not in the manor."
The house elf bowed and disappeared with a crack, a look of sheer relief on its face. Rodolphus then sat down at his desk and wrote a short note, sending it off with Nicodemus with the knowledge that Adrian would understand that ‘as soon as possible’ meant ‘now’.
Adrian,
Please come and see me as soon as possible.
Regards, Rodolphus Lestrange
