RP: Tying Up A Loose End
Date: 17 August 2005
Characters: Rodolphus Lestrange, Romilda Vane
Location: Romilda's home
Private/Public: Private
Rating: PG
Warnings: Character Death
Summary: Rodolphus infiltrates Hogsmeade to tie up a loose end.
Completion: Complete

Rodolphus waited patiently at the apparition point he'd chosen to use to get into Hogsmeade, polyjuiced into a nondescript young man he'd met in Cardiff years ago. He had false papers would stand up to scrutiny for at least this one night but he was aware that this was a dangerous option he'd chosen. Still, he did not intend to take long so it should be fine. It was a risk but a calculated one.

He walked forward when the Auror waved to him and handed over his papers. He was amused when the Auror barely glanced at his papers and him before waving him on. He didn't argue though and made his way through Hogsmeade to Romilda's home, making a mental note to thank Orla for finding out that piece of information. Once he got there, he walked up to the front door but paused when he heard raised voices inside. Romilda's was easy enough to recognise but it took him a moment to place the other one as Miles.

Well, well, wasn't that interesting... not to mention convenient. Miles would make an effective scapegoat for what he was about to do though he doubted the Aurors would be able to charge him. He smiled slightly then wandered back over the road, checking in either direction before fading into the shadows between two of the houses. He quickly cast a Disillusionment spell over himself and settled down to wait.

It wasn't long before the front door was flung open and Miles stormed out of the house and down the street. Rodolphus waited until he was out of sight then he removed the Disillusionment spell and walked over to Romilda's house. He drew her wand, hiding it at his side, then knocked on the door.

Romilda was still in a fury. Nothing had been resolved with Miles, other than a determination to keep him further away from Liam than ever before, and she was in a mess. The place was a mess. Anthony would be there soon, and she was supposed to be calm enough to go to Dennis' party. Miles had always managed to make her blood boil, and she wasn't going to give Liam up without a fight. Just as she was turning back to the living room, she heard a knock at the front door.

No doubt Miles wanted to get in one more insult. Storming back to the door she flung it open without a second thought. "If you think for one minute, Miles Bletchley..." The furious scowl on her face instantly fell when she realised that it wasn't Miles at the door. It was someone she had never seen before.

"Oh, um, sorry," she said with an apologetic tone, a small smile at the corner of her mouth. "Can I ahh... help you?" Only then did she realise she had opened her door to a complete stranger.

Rodolphus was amused at the way Romilda answered the door... and even more amused by the fact that she'd answered it in the first place. Without checking. Without any precautions whatsoever. After everything that had happened. This was going to be easier than he'd thought.

He smiled politely and impersonally, as one might do to a complete stranger. "Um, Miss Vane? Mr Nott sent me. Or rather Mr Nott contacted Mr Ollivander and he sent me. I have some wands for you to try. Mr Nott said it was quite urgent that you have a new one."

Romilda blinked a couple of times. This seemingly mild and meek fellow gave her a polite smile, and she realised exactly who he was. Theo had come through with a new wand for her, and the relief on her face was palpable. "Oh thank Merlin," she said, letting out a deep sigh. Her mood lightened almost instantly with relief. A wand meant she could now protect herself.

Ushering him in through the door, she showed him to the living room. "I'm ahh, sorry about that. I thought you were someone else."

She looked the fellow over. He wasn't at all familiar, and she didn't recognise him from Hogwarts. "So Mr Ollivander sent you, you say?" she asked, eager to see the range of wands she could try.

Rodolphus allowed himself to be ushered into the living room. He glanced around to get a feel for the room then he turned to face Romilda.

"Actually Romilda, no... I'm afraid he didn't."

Rodolphus raised Romilda's wand and cast a quick series of spells - wards to ensure no one heard anything or saw anything or noticed anything then he cast the Full Body Bind on Romilda. He doubted she could do much damage without her wand but it was best to be sure. The wand worked well enough for him since he had 'won' it from her but he did miss using his own wand.

Once he was done, he walked over to Romilda and looked down at her. "Any last words?" he asked as he pointed her wand at her.

Romilda was tucking a strand of hair behind her ear when he spoke. She frowned. "But I just thought you said..."

A moment later, she found a wand in her face and she was struck frozen in a full body bind. Her eyes gazed further at the wand and she recognised it instantly. It had been with her for half her life, and the runes painted up the side were etched in her memory, even the small nick near the tip was there. This was her wand, which could only mean that...

"Rodolphus?" she said, genuine fear in her voice. Surely not? Theo had intimated that they would come back for her, but she had thought he was exaggerating. But it was surreal, surely it wasn't happening, and the fact he asked her if she had any last words...

Her life was flashing right before her eyes, with the realisation that he was serious. She looked into his face, giving him a pleading look, but not seeing any sense of the man she thought she was going to share a child - a family with. He was going to kill her? "Why?" she asked, her voice trembling as tears began to stream down her face.

"Don't do this. I can't leave my son. I'm all he's got, Rodolphus, please." Thoughts of Liam, and Anthony filtered through her mind as she thought of all the things she had to live for.

Only now, at the end, did she realise just how much of a fool she had been.

Rodolphus eyed her dispassionately. "Because you are a loose end that must be tied off." He smiled coldly. "And I believe the phrase is... you should have thought of that before."

The smile disappeared behind a cold, calm expression then he said, "Avada Kedavra".

Green light flashed out and struck Romilda and life disappeared from her eyes. Rodolphus didn't hesitate; he quickly removed the Body Bind and the rest of the wards he'd put up then tossed the wand on top of Romilda's body.

"Goodbye, my dear," he said calmly then he walked out of the living room and out of the front door, closing it gently behind him.

He ambled through the village, making note of the buildings and people he passed as he headed for the opposite apparition point from which he'd entered. As tempting as it was to cause more chaos tonight, he only had a limited amount of time before the Polyjuice wore off. When he arrived at the apparition point, he showed his papers to the Auror there and was once again waved on his way with only the barest of looks. He nodded politely to the Auror then apparated back to Upper Slaughter.
