Adrian arrived at the manor and cursed Pansy for having no wards on the place; she was completely defenseless in the house and with somebody like Gilderoy to protect her? He swallowed uneasily, the graveness of what he was doing finally hitting him. She wouldn't have Gilderoy to protect her; her baby wouldn't either. Fuck, what was he doing?

Looking up at the manor, he sighed when he saw candles flickering in some of the rooms, hoping to hell that Pansy was out. He knew she didn't need to see this when she was pregnant and he remembered how the healers had told Tracey to rest up and have as little stress as possible. Bugger. Having one's partner die wasn't exactly stress-free. He rolled his eyes when the door opened with a simple Unlocking charm, stealing through the dark corridors he vaguely knew until he came to a lit room, spotting Gilderoy inside. It wasn't until he was nearly upon the man that he startled, scrambling out of his chair. Adrian knew he was barely magical, knew that Apparition wasn't an option. Still, it didn't seem right to kill someone who hadn't done anything more than overhear something but orders were orders.

The last thing Adrian needed was Rodolphus getting suspicious.

"Oh, hello. Why are you here?" Gilderoy demanded. "I'm sure Pansy didn't say anything about gue-"

"You know why I'm here," Adrian interrupted. "The same as you know what's going to happen so you can do it easily or make it hard. Either way you're going to end up dead on the floor," His wand never wavered as he spoke, ready to strike if Gilderoy rose his wand against him. He didn't think he would because he didn't think Gilderoy would show his weakness but one could never misjudge an opponent.

"I... I didn't. But Pansy... She's here," Gilderoy looked to the door and looked honestly worried. "You can't do it here, she's pregnant. Something might... Happen. It's too early."

Adrian sighed, looking annoyed. "She's here? Where exactly? Fuck- Why the hell doesn't this place even have wards on it? Anyone can walk in here. Your proof's right here."

"I- She doesn't need wards, she has me," he blustered. "I, she's in her dressing room, I think. Or the bathroom... She's been having the most terrible mood s-"

"How far away is the bathroom?" Adrian asked, not knowing the house well enough to guess. He had a feeling it was closer than he thought but he could still hope for the best.

Gilderoy's eyes widened. "No, you can't- Something'll happen," His voice was getting louder and Adrian heard a door down the hallway open, cursing himself for listening to the fool. With a flick of his wand and a memory of his father hexing him running through his mind, a vivid green light flashed around the room and Gilderoy crumpled to the floor, his wand still in his pocket. Adrian tried not to feel bad; it wasn't as if he hadn't given the man plenty of opportunity to hex him back or Apparate away.

He turned as the door behind him opened, his wand still in his hand. "Pansy," he said, seeing her face. "God, Pansy, you need to come with me. Now."

Just finished with a warm, calming bath, Pansy had decided to go downstairs to try to talk to Gilderoy about names for the baby. After talking to Evelyn, she'd begun to think about the baby more as her daughter, and she'd decided her daughter needed a name because she couldn't keep calling her 'Baby.' She'd been thinking about several, but she just couldn't decide if she liked any of them better than any others, and she'd not really talked about the issue of names with Gilderoy, yet. And though for some reason, Gilderoy tended to annoy her right into an evil harpy with just a few sentences these days, he was still the baby's father and ought to at least have some input into her name.

Especially since Pansy was still refusing to marry him or to let the baby have his last name. She'd gotten it into her head that this baby was likely to be the only Parkinson descendant coming from her, and she wanted the Parkinson name to go on so the baby was going to be a Parkinson. She was determined on that.

Pansy had given instructions for the two elves remaining at the estate to start cleaning up the room she was considering as the nursery, and they were hard at the job, judging from the occasional billows of dust that came from under that door. That was another reason to escape downstairs, she thought to herself, tiptoeing by the door lest they hear her and start asking questions about what she wanted. How did she know what she wanted? She'd never done this before.... The rest of her elves were in Hogsmeade, helping Millicent straighten out the Harmonia house and helping her get settled. Wicksy and Hilly were supposed to stay there at least through the next week to help with the children. It gave them experience with live children, Pansy thought, and it hopefully helped Millicent out, as well.

As Pansy headed down the stairs, she thought she heard voices coming from the library. Frowning, she almost paused on the steps. She couldn't think who Gilderoy might be talking to, with Wicksy and Hilly upstairs and busy. Then she sighed in exasperation, deciding he must be talking to himself. He did that from time to time. It was an affectation that he used when he was in Hogsmeade to reinforce the impression he wasn't all there, but it had become such a habit that it just happened instinctively when he was busy thinking about things.

Biting back a slightly annoyed comment, Pansy reached the library just as a vivid green light flashed under the door. About to ask what on earth he thought he was doing, Pansy opened the door, the words dying on her lips as she saw Gilderoy's body lying crumpled at Adrian Pucey's feet. For a moment, she stared, unable to comprehend why Adrian was even in her house at that time of night.

Adrian turned to her and spoke, and Pansy saw the wand in his hand, but nothing was connecting in her mind. She looked at Adrian blankly and then back at Gilderoy, stepping into the room with the thought that she needed to see what was wrong with Gilderoy, if he needed help. She moved to go around Adrian, and as Gilderoy's head came into view, she saw his open and lifeless eyes staring out.

All the breath left Pansy as suddenly as if all the oxygen had been sucked from the room, and her eyes grew round in comprehension as her mind put together the flash of light and the wand and Gilderoy's body. With a sound akin to a choked wail, Pansy turned awkwardly and made a dash for the door, her feet slipping on the smooth floor as she tried desperately to pick up speed. She didn't dare try to apparate....she'd been having too much trouble with it when she could focus, lately. Instead, she slid into the hall and spoke a charm to open all the doors in that hallway, picking one at random and racing through it before speaking the spell to slam and lock all the doors simultaneously. It wouldn't slow Adrian for long, she knew, but if she could get out of the house, she had a better chance of hiding herself and the baby until she could get her wits about her.

She flew across the room, charming the french doors to the terrace open just as she reached them. Not bothering to hide her exit, she hurried across the terrace and down the steps to the garden as fast as she could without breaking her neck, her progress made more difficult by the trouble she had seeing the steps over the bulge of the baby in front of her.

All Pansy could think was that she had to save her daughter, and her protective instincts gave her wings as she reached the bottom of the steps and took off across the garden. She heard Adrian behind her, but she ducked into a hedge and behind, trying to cut across sections of the garden to make herself harder to find. She was getting a stitch in her side, a sharp painful thing that took her breath as she put her hand to the spot, but she didn't dare stop running. All her thoughts had tunneled down to the need to get away so she could protect her daughter, and she didn't notice the branches tearing at her hair and clothes. Even the sharp sting of thorns cutting her right arm and cheek didn't slow her.

Suddenly, Adrian hurtled out of the hedge just behind her, and Pansy cried out, giving up her attempts to use the bushes to hide her path, instead running full out down the path, her only thought that she had to get away. She could barely breathe for the pain in her side, and she turned her head to see how close he was, one foot dropping into a depression into the ground she hadn't seen. As she stumbled, the other foot caught in her robes, sending her sprawling to the ground. Trying desperately to not fall on the baby, Pansy tried to turn her body, throwing out her hand to break the fall. There was a loud crack as her wrist snapped, and she screamed as the nauseating pain washed over her, her shoulder hitting the ground and rolling her onto her back.

Her other hand moved to cradle the injured one, and she tried to get air but couldn't seem to. The stitch in her side moved across her entire belly, and it felt like every muscle in her abdomen was seizing up at once. Her face grimaced in pain, and she wasn't sure if she was going to throw up or faint for a moment. And still the pain went on.

Adrian realised as soon as Pansy wailed that it wasn't going to be easy. He paused for a second, wondering whether it would be worth it to Stupefy her but decided he couldn't risk the fact that she was pregnant. He'd already killed her boyfriend; he couldn't exactly kill her baby too. Cursing when she locked the doors, he guessed she was heading for outside and quickly Apparated, watching as she flew out of the doors and down onto the terrace. He didn't want to spell her still, he didn't want to attack her with spells but if she didn't stop running, he really wouldn't have any choice.

Following her - jogging slowly instead of running because he really didn't want to startle her, just wait for her to tire - he cursed when he heard the branches snapping, passing the thorns soon after and wondering how scared Pansy actually was. They'd always been friends, never particularly close, but this... Pansy would never forgive him for this. He couldn't blame her because he wouldn't if he were in her position.

Finally deciding that enough was enough, he picked up speed and took what he assumed was a short-cut, coming out just behind Pansy. "Pansy!" he yelled as he saw her foot go down, trying to grab her before she could fall but knowing he wasn't going to get to her in time. His wand was jammed in his pocket and he couldn't even think about wandless magic. "Fuck," he muttered when he heard the crack, pulling his wand out to cast a pain charm on the wrist but she wasn't alright and she was barely responding to anything.

"Pansy? Pansy, are you," Adrian mentally rolled his eyes at himself. Of course she wasn't bloody okay. "Come on, sweetheart, let's get you to a Healer," he murmured, creating a Portkey from a pen knife he had in his robe and picking her up - admittedly with difficulty but then she was pregnant. "Touch this, Pans. Come on, let me get you to Evelyn's and everything will be okay."

He wasn't so sure about that but he did have great faith in John and Evelyn would be perfect for calming her down. He assumed it was something to do with the baby, wasn't really that sure, but he didn't want to take any risks. One thing for certain, that grimace on her face was not from breaking her bloody wrist.

It was in Pansy's head that she was somehow suffering under the Cruciatus curse, and that somehow it was only affecting her midsection, but that's where the baby was, and the thought of the baby in distress was more than she could bear. If she could have gotten a good breath, she'd have cried out, but she could only manage a hoarse groan of pain.

Adrian reached out to her, and she shrank back from his touch, but he gently lifted her from the ground, an action made awkward by her instinctive need to curl protectively around the baby as she panted for air. The pain began to ebb slightly, and Pansy sucked in air as the Portkey was pressed into her hand and she felt the pulling sensation in her abdomen that signaled transit.

As soon as they arrived, she began to struggle against him, trying to pull away.

Adrian almost Stupefied her when she started to try and struggle, holding her so she could curl in on herself, supporting her arse and under her knees. It wasn't an ideal way to portkey, with two armfuls of pregnant Pansy, but Adrian wasn't about to argue with it if he could help her. "Come on, sweetheart. Just a little bit more," he murmured, wishing that she hadn't had to see him killing Gilderoy. He hadn't thought she'd be home; he'd only seen the lights on in the library where Gilderoy was.

"Shh," he said when she groaned, kissing her hair. "Come on, Pansy. I know you're strong enough to do this. Just wait two seconds," He managed to drop the Portkey into her hand, holding fast onto it as it turned blue and he felt the familiar navel jerk. He vaguely thought that that probably wasn't great for the baby but he didn't want Pansy to splinch herself from the baby using Side-Along Apparition.

Thankful that he'd Portkeyed into the guest bedroom in Stephen's wing, he laid her gently on the bed and didn't protest as she pulled away although he laid a hand on her stomach, feeling all sorts of things that he was sure he'd never felt with Tracey.

"Pipsy!"

The elf popped into the room, looking surprised and even more so when she saw Pansy on the bed. "Get John. Now. Then go and get Evelyn. I'll wait here until the both are here," he said, holding onto Pansy's hand once the elf had disappeared and hoping that John would arrive soon.

Ignoring her struggles to get away, Adrian settled her on a bed. She managed to pull away mostly, but he kept hold of her hand and laid his other over the baby. Pansy had no idea who John was, but surely Adrian wouldn't send for Evelyn if he only intended to kill her and the baby. But it would never have occurred to her before today that Adrian might enter a home without invitation, let alone that he might kill someone, and the complete upheaval of her notions and her world had left her in shock.

'How could you?' she cried, trying to make sense of it all. 'He was helpless! He had no more magic than a child!' She was quite a sight, her hair tangled and full of twigs and leaves, the cut on her face oozing blood slowly. There was a streak of dirt or something along her cheekbone, and the shoulder of her robe was torn open. She couldn't control the surges of hurt and anger and guilt that she was feeling, and suddenly she lurched at Adrian, trying to hurt him in some way, trying to cause him some measure of the pain she was feeling. She did what she could, hitting and clawing, mindlessly lashing out as the tears started, not even noticing the damage she was doing to her broken wrist, all the while crying out her distress.

Another wave of pain hit her as her abdomen tightened painfully, and Pansy doubled over, clutching at her stomach. It could only be the baby, and it suddenly hit her that she could very well lose her daughter. Keening fearfully, she began to beg, to beseech her baby to hold on, to stay with her, pleading with Adrian to do something, offering anything to let her keep her baby.

Adrian sighed when Pansy started to struggle, knowing she needed to be kept calm and that arguing back wouldn't do either of them any good. Adrian would never forgive himself if he hurt the baby- God, why hadn't Gilderoy made less noise? Why couldn't he have been somewhere else? Why did he have to hear the fucking conversation in the first place instead of looking after the mother of his child?

"I didn't have a choice," Adrian said softly, looking at her and feeling angry at himself. "Please just- Let me heal that cut on your face," He didn't move his wand too close to her face but murmured a spell, the cut cleaned and sealed in an instant. "Pansy... Try and calm down. I know you're mad as fuck at me right now but the baby... You've got to stay calm," He bit his lip, looking at her, his hand still resting on her belly. He didn't resist when she clawed at him, feeling her nails nick his face but she was mostly too distressed to cause much damage. "Come on, don't make this worse. I've taken the pain away but it doesn't make it less broken."

He brushed her hair back off of her face and shook his head. "You shouldn't have run. I was never going to hurt you."

He swore when he felt her stomach tighten, remembering when Tracey had gone into contractions. "It's alright, John will be here soon. He'll look after you," He gripped the hand of her unbroken wrist a little tighter. "Come on, squeeze my hand. You'll be fine, sweetheart. Just a little longer."

Adrian heard the crack of Apparition signaling John's arrival and he sighed with relief.

John began preparing his Potions bag the moment Pipsy Apparated into the house. He knew that the only reason William would send a house elf was if there was trouble, especially since he knew that William and his family were supposed to be on vacation outside of the country. He looked up a little surprised when Pipsy mentioned a pregnant lady, and wondered just what William had gotten himself into since there was no way that Stephen was responsible for getting anyone pregnant. Then again, he never thought that William would cheat on Evelyn. Still, he took everything he had for pregnancies, and then gave Pipsy his hand. They arrived in Stephen's wing, and John started to think that maybe he had misjudged the situation.

"She be in bedroom in there," Pipsy said, pointing to the closed door. "Me inform Master and Mistress now." She disappeared without waiting for a response.

John went straight inside and his eyes widened when he saw who was there. However, thinking about it, John really wasn't surprised to see the boy there. It made much more sense than either Stephen or William getting this woman pregnant. He was half tempted to kick him out on Stephen's behalf, but the boy was almost as pale as he had been the first time he had met him, and back then Adrian was close to death. John didn't think that in good conscience he could kick the boy out. "Adrian," he said curtly as he sat the bag on the night stand and took out his wand. "All right, my dear, I need you to talk to me, and tell me what you feel." He really didn't need to know, the wand told him everything he needed to help her, but he'd been a healer long enough to know that people worked themselves in a state of frenzy when they were hurt.

There was a broken wrist, and her ankle was sprained, but the baby was his first concern. "Here, drink this," he said as he uncapped a vial, and brought her to her lips. "You're having contractions and this will help stop them, but you need to drink it and relax," he said softly.

Panting through the pain and clinging to Adrian's hand for support even as she begged him to not take her child, Pansy was only vaguely aware of a new presence in the room. She was tiring quickly and when the contraction began to ease, she couldn't seem to hold herself up and lay back against the pillow, spent. A hand held a potion to her lips, and she tried to summon the energy to fight it but couldn't.

'Don't take her,' she begged weakly after swallowing the bitter liquid. 'She hasn't done anything! Please, Adrian, don't kill her, too!' She was so very tired, and her eyes closed, but her pitiful refrain kept going, her voice choking as tears clogged her throat again.

Adrian looked up when John came in, knowing he looked relieved to see him. He was sure it was pretty impossible for him to look more panicked anyway- Well, unless something was wrong with Stephen and thankfully, nothing was. Nothing would be if Adrian could get his own way. "She fell over and broke her wrist. I cast a pain charm on it but I couldn't fix it," he said, reporting in the way he'd been taught to at the Aurory. "I healed up a cut in her cheek but it's the contractions that worry me. She fell on her back, not her stomach, thank fuck, but she's stressed."

He shook his head at Pansy's words, leaning down to press a kiss to her forehead. "Pansy, we're not taking her anywhere. She's going to be just fine when you calm down. John's a Healer, a very good one, and he's going to look after you."

He kept a hold on Pansy's hand, brushing her hair back off of her face. "Will she be alright?"

John listened to the list of injuries, confirming what he already knew. He admitted that the boy seemed genuinely concerned, but he couldn't forget her words. He gave Adrian a sharp look, before smiling again as he looked down at her. "Pansy, I'm John. I'm going to take care of you and your child. You'll both be all right, but you need to relax. I'll try to combine spells and potions, but too many potions would impact the foetus, which means it's very important that you relax." He cast another spell to increase the potency of the potion and make sure that the contractions faded away.

He went back to his bag. "This one will help you relax it." He smiled at her. "Is it all right if Adrian stays here? He'll leave if you don't want him here." He didn't know what was going on, but he would not let him stay in the same room if it agitated her more. "Please, you don't need to cry. I promise that you both will be fine."

Pansy tried to focus on the stranger's words, but it was difficult. It felt like she had to travel such a long distance just to pay attention, and concentration felt almost beyond her strength. Her belly tightened again, but the contraction was less intense than the previous ones and merely pulled a slight groan from her.

As the new contraction eased, she found another potion at her mouth and this one she drank more readily, shuddering at the foul taste. The stranger was smiling at her, but it didn't help her know him and she blinked at him. He told her not to cry and assured her they would both be fine, but she shook her head, her eyes full of guilt and regret. Her sweet, gentle Gilderoy was dead and though he'd had to put up with her increasingly shrewish temper and general unhappiness the last several months, he'd never said a cross word to her or shown her anything but love and concern. That she'd felt suffocated by him was more her fault than his, and he'd not deserved the way she'd treated him. And there was nothing she could do about it now.

Pansy turned away from the man, her eyes flooding with new tears that spilled down her cheeks. Awkwardly, she rolled to her side, curling into a ball around the baby as she wept, her body shaking with sobs.

John sat down on the edge of the bed, and ran his hand over her back. "Now, now, we'll have none of that. What did I tell you? You need to relax." It had been too long since he'd dealt with emotional, hormonal pregnant women, and he couldn't seem to find the right words. Of course, Pansy wasn't a normal emotional, hormonal pregnant woman, and maybe that was the problem. He had no idea what had happened and he didn't want to ask now.

He sighed in relief when he heard the door open and saw Evelyn walk in. "Oh my dear, just in time. Could you make sure that she calms down while I finish working to stabilise her." John was up in a moment and let Evelyn take his place.

Evelyn pushed the door, and took a look around the room. She frowned when she saw Adrian standing there, but when she saw Pansy, her expression changed. She smiled reassuringly. "John, do what you need." She sat on the bed and took her hand. "Pansy, love, listens to me. John is a very good healer. He delivered my children, all three of them. He tells you that he's too old to deal with pregnancies, but he's the best."

She leaned down and kissed her hair. "It's all right, love. You need to stop crying now, and in a minutes, you'll be fine, and so will your baby girl."

Adrian breathed a sigh of relief when Evelyn walked in, knowing that she, if anybody, would be able to calm Pansy down. He wasn't good at the whole being nice thing, especially not when all he could keep thinking of was how to get the body away from Pansy's manor so she wouldn't be implicated in his death. He didn't want Rodolphus finding out about her; she didn't deserve to be murdered for being in her own house.

"She... Evelyn, I have to go. If I don't do something, she'll be in more trouble," he murmured, keeping his voice low so Pansy wouldn't overhear. "Will you stay with her until I get back? And fuck... Stephen. I need to find him and tell him," He bit his lip, looking down at Pansy once more. She looked so frail and vulnerable; Adrian really didn't want to leave her despite the fact she thought he was a murderous scumbag.

"You're sure she'll be fine?" he asked John, not prepared to leave her otherwise.

John glared at the boy. "They are both fine, and she'll be better if you leave," he said coldly. He wasn't sure why this poor woman thought that Adrian was going to kill their daughter and at the moment he didn't want to know. He only knew that his presence was distressing her and his patient came before anything else. "Go, do whatever it is that you need to do. Pansy will be fine."

He didn't mention that finding Stephen would be a very good idea, because springing this news on the boy would result into some serious bodily harm. He had known the Cornfoots for too long, not to know that Charles had taught his boys to use their hands as much as their wands, and he wasn't looking to patching Adrian up once more.

Evelyn looked at the two men for a moment, not sure what was going on. John was never rude or abrupt, but he was almost snapping at Adrian, and that was not something he did. However, she couldn't ask, not until she could get them alone, because anything could upset Pansy at the moment. "Go, love," she told Adrian. "John and I will take care of her. You go do what you need, and when you find Stephen come back, all right?"

She looked down at Pansy, her smile never faltering. "John is almost done, and then we'll get you something to eat. When we're done, you can get some sleep." She squeezed her hand. "Ill be here if you need me. In fact, I'll stay here as long as you want."

Adrian raised his eyebrows at John's tone but didn't comment, knowing it would probably be better if he said nothing. He knew John had heard what Pansy had said and he supposed John thought he should scarper. Luckily, Adrian felt the same way no matter how worried he was about Pansy. Gilderoy had to be moved, preferably to somewhere public so somebody could find him. Hogsmeade was the perfect choice; he knew there were also no Auror patrols near the train station. He couldn't risk leaving him at Parkinson manor... If Rodolphus found out and then got to know that Pansy was there then he didn't doubt he'd be sent to finish the job and he couldn't do that.

"Alright," he said softly, kissing the top of Evelyn's head and finally feeling confident that Pansy would be okay. "I'll see you soon... Stephen, I'll go get him too. But..." He looked down at Pansy and then Evelyn. "I've got to do something else first."

Saying goodbye to John, he Apparated away to Pansy's manor to retrieve Gilderoy's body. It was the least he could do considering everything. He also needed to make sure that the Aurors wouldn't find him there, wouldn't find him for a few days if possible.

She felt the bed shift as someone sat down and then somebody was rubbing her back, but Pansy was too caught up in her emotional turmoil to pay much attention to what was being said. It finally registered that one of the voices was Evelyn's, and Pansy awkwardly rolled onto her back, her body feeling tired and lethargic as she moved.

'Evelyn?' she sniffed, clinging to her hand and reaching with the other arm, as well, though her hand didn't want to function correctly due to the swelling, but Pansy didn't notice because she was feeling no discomfort thanks to the pain spells. 'Evelyn, he's dead!' she cried, fresh tears starting.

'He's dead and I was so hateful to him and now he's dead!' she sobbed.

Evelyn leaned down, and hugged her tight. "It's all right, love. Don't think about it," she said, not sure what was going on. However, considering Adrian's presence, she could make same guesses. There were so many people she needed to think about. She couldn't let Pansy get herself into a state, but she couldn't let her talk in front of John. The old wizard had never spoken about any of them, but she didn't feel it was right to put more burdens on him.

"John?"

He cast another spell and looked up. "I'm done. She'll be sleepy for a while. The potion is the one making her lethargic, and I've cast some spells for her wrist, but I don't dare give her more potions for that. Keep her calm, and in bed. She should be on bed rest for at least a week. I'll be back tomorrow to check on her. If she starts having more contractions or if she gets agitated, call me. It's important that she stay calm."

Evelyn nodded. "I'll keep an eye on her. Thank you, John."

"Anything for you and your family. I shall see you in the morning." John put everything away in his bag, and Disapparated.

"Pansy, love, it's just us now. You heard what John said. You have to stay calm. Don't worry about anything or anyone else." She wasn't sure if she would have been able to do that in Pansy's place, but it was probably for the best.

Pansy clung to Evelyn, unable to stop the tears or the quiet sobs. She shook her head, not sure how she was supposed to not think about what had happened, but she did stop speaking until the other witch told her they were alone.

Evelyn told her to not worry, but Pansy couldn't stop the images that flashed into her head, the memories of things she'd said and done over the last several months . . . each one sending another knife through her heart as she cringed at her awful behaviour. 'But I can't . . .' she started, barely able to talk. 'He won't know . . . Oh, what have I done?!' Her voice choked again, and she started coughing.

Evelyn shifted on the bed, so she could help Pansy sit up. She summoned all the pillows and piled them up against the headboard, so that Pansy could rest there. When she was done, she sat back in front of her, smiling gently. "Okay... Pansy, listen to me. Why don't you tell me what happened? But I need you to stop crying, because if you don't, I'll have no idea what you're saying, and I can't possibly help you if I don't know what's going on." It was a technique that it usually worked with the kids, and while Pansy wasn't a child, she was emotionally weak at the moment.

"You haven't done anything. You know that, right?" she asked softly. "Whatever happened, it's not your fault." Bloody hell, why did Adrian have to disappear. This would be so much easier if she knew what the hell was going on.

Evelyn helped her sit up, piling up pillows behind her so she was well-supported. She was talking in a very soothing voice, quiet and smiling the whole time, and Pansy began to calm down, in spite of her distress. She felt sore all over, somehow, and she was so very tired. The painful sobs had eased, but her eyes were still leaking slow tears. Her wrist was stiff when she tried to wipe her eyes, and she looked at it, a slight puzzled frown on her face. She let the arm fall to the bed and took a couple of shaky breaths.

'He came home. He'd been in Hogsmeade again. He's always in Hogsmeade. He's been saying he would take me shopping for weeks now, but he can't spare the time because he has to be in Hogsmeade. The wizarding world would not end if he took me shopping one day, I don't care what he does there....' she started, falling back into an annoyed tone before realizing it. As soon as she noticed, of course, she felt badly, and then the tears started falling faster.

'And then he was hovering, and it really drives me crazy when he does that. I mean, the attention is nice, but he wants me to be so involved in what he's doing for me and it's just exhausting. Everything has to be so extravagant, and I can't just say thank you or it hurts his feelings. And I got mad at him and had a screaming fit so I went upstairs to take a bath.'

She turned a woeful face to Evelyn and cried, 'I yelled at him, Evelyn. I said horrible, hurtful things and all he was doing was trying to be nice and take care of me. That's all he's done all summer, between the times that he's gone for days or weeks at a time and can't spare a single minute for me. He's either right there in my face and under my feet or he's gone . . . there's no middle ground with him! And all summer, I've gotten more annoyed and frustrated and furious and I wasn't even sure if I even still wanted to be with him because he's driving me so batty all the time, and I've yelled at him and said mean things and been horrible to him and tried to avoid being home and now he's dead and the last thing he heard was me screaming at him that I couldn't stand to be in the same room with him!'

Pansy burst into sobs again, covering her face with her hands.

Evelyn listened, and at first he thought that she was talking about Adrian, but that notion was dispelled very quickly, since she knew that Adrian hadn't been in Hogsmeade but in Capri. She try to follow Pansy's words, and the one thing that was evident was that Pansy, like every pregnant woman, changed her mind quicker than people could follow. She smiled. "Love, of course, you got annoyed and frustrated. You're pregnant. Your hormones are running amok with your body, you magic is screwy. You did what we have all done, so you shouldn't blame yourself."

She called a house elf and got a handkerchief. She pulled Pansy's hands away and wiped her face. "You will yell at more people before you have this child, Pansy. There is nothing wrong or surprising about that. Have you even seen a Healer before today? He would have explained all of that. You can't feel guilty for that," she said, not asking about the identity of the man, although she had a pretty good idea about the who. She did not ask about how he died. If Adrian was involved, she'd have to find out, but for now, she was happy in her ignorance. It was easier than to have the certainty that the boy Stephen loved, the boy who played with her children was a killer. It wasn't that she was stupid or naive. She's heard enough things to know the truth, but it was different to really know the truth, and have it confirmed it this way. "He was the father of your child, Pansy. He'd want you to think about the baby first."

Pansy sniffed, letting Evelyn wipe her face. 'We went to a healer. At the Shack. I don't remember him saying anything about it other than that mood swings were part of pregnancy.' Although, truthfully, there was a lot Pansy didn't remember about what that healer had said. Mostly just the confirmation that she was pregnant and that it was a girl. And the blessed nausea potion, of course. And Gilderoy teasing the healer about parental vitamins.

She heard what Evelyn said, and she knew it was the truth. Even through all the things she'd said, through all the tantrums and anger and tears, Gilderoy had kept an even temper and told her every chance he got that he loved her and their daughter. She didn't fight so hard to keep the baby safe just to end up hurting herself with her own guilt and sadness.

Nodding slightly, Pansy lay back against the pillows. Closing her eyes, she tried to calm herself down, wiping at her eyes from time to time with the handkerchief Evelyn had given her. The tears slowed as her body began to relax, but they continued to leak from the corners of her eyes, leaving wet tracks across her cheeks.

Evelyn smiled approvingly as she watched Pansy relax. The tears didn't stop but eventually she feel asleep. As she promised, Evelyn stayed there. Eventually she'd found out what had happened, but for now, she'd keep her promise and watch as Pansy slept.
