Completion: Complete

Terry and Sophia had had a long, but pleasing, day, following what had been a wonderful Friday afternoon, picnicking with Ben in the Room of Requirement. Today, though, Terry had left Ben with Oliver, and taken Sophia on a surprise shopping trip, finally using the five random items he'd given her at her birthday dinner. They'd been to all the major shopping capitals: London, Paris, Rome, Prague (where he wouldn't mind returning to sometime with Severus) and New York. Terry had thought ahead and created Portkeys (secretly) and surprised Sophia with the trip that morning. They'd toured both Muggle and Wizarding sections, spending most of the their time in the Muggle areas of the places they'd visited.

Terry had especially loved New York, and wished they'd been able to spend more than a few hours there. He'd made Sophia promise that they could bring Ben back closer to Christmas, so he could see the tree in Rockefeller Center that the nice clerk at a particularly cozy used book shop had been kind enough to inform the British tourists about. He also wanted to bring Ben to Paris, to see the Eifle Tower at night, and to Prague to see the Astronomical Clock. He'd made Sophia promise them a weekend during the Christmas Holidays for that too.

They'd come away with a substantial amount of new clothes, accessories and, most importantly in Terry's opinion, books - both Muggle and Wizard. He'd been ecstatic to find an extremely rare copy of a 12th century Tibetan Monk's manuscript on summoning charms in nearly its original form. Sophia had teased him about being a complete geek, but he'd just beamed at her and kissed her forehead happily. He'd never really known there were so many bookshops and he had a feeling they'd barely managed to peruse a tenths of the ones out there. Needless to say, their pockets and bags were nearly filled to overflowing with shrunken and feather-light packages.

Their stomachs were also over stuffed. They'd lunched on cheese and baguettes in Paris, street-side pretzels and hot dogs in New York, numerous Mediterranean dishes in Rome. Terry was almost surprised to find that he really liked hot dogs, especially dripping with onions, ketchup and mustard. It was no wonder, though, Americans were so unhealthy, eating food like that everyday couldn't be good for the internal organs. Sophia had laughed at him again when he'd said that, so he'd had no choice but to eat her hot dog as well, laughing at her when she pouted at him.

Finally, they'd Portkeyed back to Hogsmeade, and made their final stop, Eloise Midgen's bookshop. Terry was ashamed to say he hadn't been in there yet, and couldn't imagine why when he finally saw what she had to offer.

"This place is great!" he exclaimed to Sophia, still feeling pretty euphoric from their day. "Why haven't we come here yet?"

Sophia had had possibly the best day of her entire life that day, and she was quite sad that it was beginning to come to an end. Before they headed back to Hogwarts, Sophia had wanted to stop at the bookshop that Stephen had told her so much about, excited to see what all had gotten her friend's heart so aflutter.

When they entered the bookshop, Sophia nearly gasped from the sheer amount of books that she saw, having no idea where to begin looking.

"My god, this place is amazing," she looked over at Terry excitedly as they moved through the shop, pausing at a bookshelf every now and then to peruse the titles.

"There's some world-class stuff in here, Ter."

Terry didn't respond right away, having wandered up and down one isle, and by the time he reached Sophia again, he already had more than a dozen books that he just had to add to his library.

"They're necessary," he said, grinning at her. "I'm going to set these down, so I don't fall over." He moved quickly to the counter and set down the small tower of books, before heading back to Sophia.

"I want a look at Eloise's children's section." He grinned even wider. "Not that Ben needs more books, but one can never have enough."

Sophia had grabbed a few books herself, but not nearly as many as Terry had. She blamed the teaching. And the fact that Terry had always been a much bigger nerd than she had been.

She followed him to the children's section, nearly gasping when she saw all the titles.

"Oh my god, I want them all."

She stared at the wall of books, completely mesmerised, and then pulled one off the shelf. She sat down on the floor and began flipping through the book, looking for her favorite passages.

Terry was enraptured as well, and pulled several volumes of books off the shelf without even looking in them, knowing that he wanted them already. He sat on the floor, cross-legged facing Sophia, and peered over the book so he was reading upside down. He leaned down and peeked at the cover. The Secret Garden.

"What's this then?" he asked, scooting around so he was pressed against her side, reading along with her. When Mary Lennox was sent to Misslethwaite Manor, everybody said she was the most disagreeable child ever seen. "That's not very nice. This is a children's book?

Dennis had been out the back of the store, smoking. He was a little bored, and still thinking about where he could go that night. The woman in Edinburgh had been fun to play with.

He'd followed Jander's suggestions - visiting the woman and stalking her every night. Making phone calls and terrorising her for many nights.

Of course, he'd fed off her a few times, and she had forgotten each time. But then last night, he'd drained her. The thrill of the chase had made him feel more powerful, and the screams she made before he finally took her had been so sweet. Her blood sang with fear pumping through it, and it had been sweet right until the moment her heart stopped beating.

But now he had to start all over again. Find a new victim. He was excited by the prospect of whatever Jander wanted him to do later in the week, but for now, he was contemplating his options. The thought of some easy prey in Blackpool was on his mind, but he quickly heard the voices, and the heartbeats that were heading off in the dark back along the road to Hogwarts.

Tossing away the cigarette, he ran along ahead, lolling about in the trees as he waited for the travellers. His arms folded as he leaned against the tree, he broke out in a wide grin when he recognised Sophia coming towards him. She was with Terry Boot.

Jander's lessons about playing with your prey were at the forefront of his mind, and the thought of toying with her, when she was already freaked out enough by him was just too good an opportunity to pass up.

"It's dangerous after dark," he drawled as they were close enough. "You should be more careful. Never know what sort of creatures you'll run into." He let out a soft little laugh, his eyes flicking between Sophia's reaction, and watching Boot closely.

Sophia tensed when she heard the voice in the shadows, and she knew that Terry had felt it. She began walking faster, moving her arm around Terry's waist, pulling him closer to her.

"Dennis, please just leave us alone. We've had a long day and just want to get back to the castle." She stared into the shadows, barely making out his outline in the dark.

She grasped at Terry's cloak, her grip tight with fear.

Terry stiffened, and his eyes narrowed, as Dennis the Creepy popped out of no where, the good mood from just moments before vanishing. He pulled Sophia closer and carefully stuffed his bags into his pockets, grasping his wand out of sight. Just in case. Not that it could do much good against a vampire. But it made him feel better.

"You're not wanted here," he said coldly, quickening his pace and bringing Sophia with him. He could sense her fear, and just wanted to get back to the main road and to Hogwarts. "Go away before I decide to find out just what spells work against vampires."

Panting for breath, and trying hard to ignore the pain radiating from his shoulder, head and back, he finally reached Sophia, not even sparing a glance for Dennis as the coward ran away. There would be time to deal with him later, right now he had to save Sophia.

"Oh god," he cried, pressing his good hand against her neck, feeling her pulse flutter against his fingers, slowing and weakening with every second. He whispered every charm he could think of, but without his wand it was hopeless.

"It's going to be okay, Soph," he whispered, pressing his hand more firmly over the wound. "You're going to be okay!" He chanted more and more healing charms-everything he knew-but there was not even a flicker of magic. "Come on, Soph. You're strong, and I'm going to get us to the Shack."

He was crying, huge gulping sobs, at the same time trying to gather her into his arms, screaming as a piece of his collarbone tore through skin. "Soph, wake up, come on. You're okay, baby, you're okay." He whispered it over and over, willing her to wake up, willing someone to come help them.

Sophia had been fading quickly, but she came to when she heard Terry's voice. She opened her eyes slowly, peering up into Terry's face. "No..." she whispered softly, pulling her other hand up to Terry's wrist, squeezing weakly.

"I'm going to die," she said, her voice cracking. Her vision blurred with tears and fatigue, and she felt herself beginning to fade away again.

She struggled to keep herself alert, needing to be able to say goodbye to Terry.

"No you're not," Terry insisted, fingers grasping for anything-anything-that would help, and falling on Sophia's wand. He grasped it desperately, and started with the healing charms, managing to stop the bleeding, but not able to repair the torn skin. "You're going to be fine. See, I have your wand now. It's all going to be fine." His voice broke, but he steadied his wand and cast another healing spell, hands trembling from shock and fatigue and pain.

But he didn't have blood replenishing potion, he realized, and Sophia's wand felt strange in his hand. The spells worked though, but he didn't know if they would hold. He could already sense the magic unraveling, and knew it was because he couldn't focus, his head was spinning, and there were suddenly two of Sophia, two bodies lying there in pools of blood, sticky beneath his fingers and under his knees.

Cormac watched as the wheeled Sophia and Terry away, his heart heavy. He turned to the last Mediwitch, who was in the process of cleaning the blood from the floor where Terry had sat.

"I'm going to need him lucid when I return," he said. "I'm sending over a patrol Auror to wait, have him come get me when Boot is ready for questioning."

The mediwitch nodded, and returned to her task, and Cormac left in a hurry. He stopped by the Auror office first, and sent Kristopher Hornell back to the Shack, wrote up a very brief report and sent another two Aurors to ward off the scene where he'd found Terry and Sophia, and to look for any traces of activity.

Finally, no more than twenty minutes later, he grabbed his broom and made a quick trip of the ride to Hogwarts. He went directly to the kichens, knowing the quickest route to Cornfoot was have a House Elf bring him to his quarters.

"I need to see Stephen Cornfoot," he stated, looking at the House Elf most clearly in charge. "Official Auror business."

"Yes, sir, Auror McLaggen, sir," the elf said, and quickly led him to the right set of rooms. Cormac thanked him, and knocked at Stephen's door.

Stephen was surprised when he opened the door and saw Cormac standing there. He frowned, wondering why Adrian would ask the man to come here after he'd told him that he would have preferred never seeing an Auror in his room - anyone other than Adrian, of course.

He opened the door a little wider, trying to smile regardless of his misgivings. "If you want to come in, I'll let Adrian know that you're here."

Cormac shook his head, and said, "No, I don't need to come. There's been an attack." He took a deep breath. He hated this part of the job. "Terry is seriously injured, and Sophia..." he closed his eyes, and opened them quickly before continuing. "Sophia has been killed. I don't have any more information than that. Terry asked for you, and then the Healer's took him into a private room."

He sighed. "I'm so sorry, Corn...Stephen. Terry will be out for awhile, but it might be good if you were there when he woke up. He refused to accept that Sophia is dead." He sighed. "I'm going back to Headquarters to see what my Aurors have found, and then I'll come to the shack to talk to Terry."

Stephen watched Cormac go. He didn't know why the hell he bothered, it was unlikely that the man would pursue his lover's brother. Hell, in a way, he could understand. Stephen would do anything for Adrian and protecting someone he cared about wouldn't be outside the realm of possibilities.

Pushing everything away, he closed the door, and stepped inside. He went to their bedroom, and laid on his stomach, next to Adrian. "Cormac was here. I need to go to the Shack. Terry was attacked. I don't have any details, but he's there." He slid a hand over Adrian's leg. "Sophia was with him. She's dead."

Adrian had heard somebody at the door but had decided to ignore them in favour of reading a letter from Violet. It had arrived soon after him and Stephen had had sex and he was laughing as he read all about what she'd been doing.

"Listen to this, Violet claims she's 'absolutely marvellous' at horse-riding," he said, sobering up as Stephen spoke. Although him and Sophia hadn't been on brilliant terms compared to their past relationship, it didn't mean he didn't care about her. He'd gone out of his way to make sure Creevey hadn't hurt her before. "What? What did you say?"

He sat up quickly, grabbing for his wand on the nightstand even as he wandlessly summoned robes from the wardrobes. "It was Creevey, wasn't it?"

Stephen shrugged. "I'd say that's a good guess, but considering that your dear friend seems to be leading the investigation and he's fucking Creevey's brother, you can see why I'm not very optimistic about their- your department ever doing anything about it."

He stood up, and pulled out his cloak and broom. "I need to go and see Terry. Right now he's my first and only concern. Whatever happens with Creevey-" He sighed. "He should have died a long time ago, maybe she'd still-" Stephen pinched his nose. "I can't do this. I can't worry about her, because there is nothing I can do about Sophia. I need to go. Do you want to come?" he asked after a moment.

Terry came to slowly, hearing someone saying his name. "Stephen?" he asked, groggy. His shoulder ached, and so did his nose, and his head still felt like it was going to split open. "Sophia. You need to go make sure Sophia's okay."

He realized Stephen had asked him a question, something about Adrian. "He really wants to come in? Has he seen Sophia? Is she okay?" He looked at Stephen, eyes begging his friend to tell him that Sophia was okay, that he'd gotten her here in time.

Stephen brushed Terry's hair back, his smile softening. He didn't want to tell Terry about Sophia, but it was probably better coming from him than some stranger. "We're going to see her afterwards... to say goodbye."

He leaned forward and kissed Terry's forehead. "I'm sorry, love, but she died." He wished he had more details to give Terry, but he hadn't really felt like talking to Cormac more than he had to. "Adrian would like to come in. He- he needs to know what happened. Do you mind?" he asked, knowing that it wouldn't be easy for Terry to tell them what happened. "If you can't, that's fine, too." He squeezed Terry's hand gently. "Whatever you want."

Terry blinked at Stephen, not sure why he was saying they'd go see her later. That didn't make sense. They need to see her now, make sure she was..."No. That's not right," Terry said, grabbing Stephen's arm and digging in with his fingers. "There's been a mistake. Tell me there's been a mistake, Stephen."

He knew though, that there'd been no mistake. He could see it in Stephen's eyes, and even if it wasn't for that he'd still know. He forced the tears away, and looked at Stephen with clear eyes. "Tell him to come in. He was her friend too." He leaned back and closed his eyes, needing a moment to collect himself before Adrian came in.

"It's not your bloody fault, Terry," Stephen repeated. "She was a grown woman, a stupid one who liked the idea of love too much, but a woman nonetheless. None of us was responsible for taking care of her. You can be a friend, but you can't force someone to grow up, not unless they want to."

He smiled back at Adrian. "Fine, but don't get involved personally. You're too close, and honestly, there are bigger fishes than Dennis Creevey. Hell, let Cormac deal with him. I always said that the best way to get to the creep was through his brother."

Adrian frowned slightly. "You don't think Cormac's too close with it being his boyfriend's brother?" he asked. He wanted to do this, not for Sophia although he did want justice for her, but because Creevey had been a thorn in their sides for far too long and Adrian was sick of it. "If I get assigned to this case, I'm not turning it down. You know as well as I do that they haven't had full disclosure before. Not anymore, he's not hurting anyone else."

He looked towards Boot for a moment. "Stephen's right, it wasn't your fault," he said. "Don't start beating yourself up about it when all you tried to do was get her away or I'll have to smack you one. Self-pity makes my dick soft and god knows Stephen won't thank you for that," he added with a small smile, trying to get Terry off of the subject of Sophia for the moment in case he cried again.

"I honestly don't give a shit if Cormac's too close," Stephen replied without mincing words. "Don't even tell me that he hadn't known before. Both Sophia met both Colin and Dennis in that battle. There is no way that your friend didn't know about what that creep had done. He can finally fix what he screwed up the first time."

Stephen snorted. "I'm sure Terry is really interested if you're hard or not... Okay and that was not a statement I thought I would ever say. Baby, you manage the impossible."

Stephen thought about it. Getting a healer mean a long discussion about why Terry should stay, and Stephen knew that the healer would be right, but it wouldn't change the fact that Terry would go mad in this place. "Look, if you aren't staying, then no point in starting an argument. We can go, but we get copies of your medical record, and you stop and see Poppy before you see Ben, and if she says that you need to stay there, then we take care of Ben, and bring him to the infirmary in the morning."

He was almost ready to leave when he remembered Sophia. He would have happily left without seeing her, but he'd stay for Adrian. "Can you wait for us?" he asked Terry. "We won't take long, and then we can go to Hogwarts together."

Terry wanted to protest, wanted to go see Sophia too, but he knew Adrian wouldn't want him there when he went. "I need to see her too," he said. "But you two go first. I want to be alone. And I want to do it now. Before we leave." His lower lip trembled, but he managed to keep from crying.

"You two go on. I'm going to straighten up in here, go find my stuff. I'll meet you back here when you're done." He swallowed, and pushed the covers back, getting slowly to his feet. "I'll see you in a bit."

Adrian looked at him, exasperated, but didn't comment, reaching for Stephen's hand instead. "Come on," he said softly to Stephen, not wanting to do this but knowing he had to.

He looked back at Boot. "Meet you back here," he affirmed before staring up at Stephen and then looking at their linked hands. "Are you sure you want to do this? I really don't mind if you don't."
