Terry and Sophia had had a long, but pleasing, day, following what had been a wonderful Friday afternoon, picnicking with Ben in the Room of Requirement. Today, though, Terry had left Ben with Oliver, and taken Sophia on a surprise shopping trip, finally using the five random items he'd given her at her birthday dinner. They'd been to all the major shopping capitals: London, Paris, Rome, Prague (where he wouldn't mind returning to sometime with Severus) and New York. Terry had thought ahead and created Portkeys (secretly) and surprised Sophia with the trip that morning. They'd toured both Muggle and Wizarding sections, spending most of the their time in the Muggle areas of the places they'd visited.

Terry had especially loved New York, and wished they'd been able to spend more than a few hours there. He'd made Sophia promise that they could bring Ben back closer to Christmas, so he could see the tree in Rockefeller Center that the nice clerk at a particularly cozy used book shop had been kind enough to inform the British tourists about. He also wanted to bring Ben to Paris, to see the Eifle Tower at night, and to Prague to see the Astronomical Clock. He'd made Sophia promise them a weekend during the Christmas Holidays for that too.

They'd come away with a substantial amount of new clothes, accessories and, most importantly in Terry's opinion, books - both Muggle and Wizard. He'd been ecstatic to find an extremely rare copy of a 12th century Tibetan Monk's manuscript on summoning charms in nearly its original form. Sophia had teased him about being a complete geek, but he'd just beamed at her and kissed her forehead happily. He'd never really known there were so many bookshops and he had a feeling they'd barely managed to peruse a tenths of the ones out there. Needless to say, their pockets and bags were nearly filled to overflowing with shrunken and feather-light packages.

Their stomachs were also over stuffed. They'd lunched on cheese and baguettes in Paris, street-side pretzels and hot dogs in New York, numerous Mediterranean dishes in Rome. Terry was almost surprised to find that he really liked hot dogs, especially dripping with onions, ketchup and mustard. It was no wonder, though, Americans were so unhealthy, eating food like that everyday couldn't be good for the internal organs. Sophia had laughed at him again when he'd said that, so he'd had no choice but to eat her hot dog as well, laughing at her when she pouted at him.

Finally, they'd Portkeyed back to Hogsmeade, and made their final stop, Eloise Midgen's bookshop. Terry was ashamed to say he hadn't been in there yet, and couldn't imagine why when he finally saw what she had to offer.

"This place is great!" he exclaimed to Sophia, still feeling pretty euphoric from their day. "Why haven't we come here yet?"

Dennis snorted. "Your words are killing me here," he said as he tried not to burst out laughing.

Dennis' eyes widened for just a moment at the mention of fire. He suspected Boot might actually try something like that. Before Terry could even think to form a spell, Dennis moved at lightning speed, coming up behind Sophia.

"Still frightened of me, Soph?" he said in a low voice as he grasped her shoulders hard and watched that vein pulsing across her neck. He licked his lips in anticipation of just taking a small bite. The pull of her blood was intoxicating, and he had firmly made up his mind that he wasn't going to let her - or anyone stopping him.

"I promise, it doesn't hurt. It feels really good. I know how much you like that." His fangs were bared and a wave of desire washed through him at the thought of drinking from her.

Sophia's breath caught in her throat when Dennis moved behind her so suddenly, and she squeezed at Terry's waist as tightly as she could. She struggled to get out of Dennis' grasp, but he was just too strong for her.

"Get off of me, Dennis!" Her voice was shaking, and she had begun to cry, even though she hadn't realised it at all.

She was terrified. Dennis was so close that she could actually see the light of the street gleaming off his teeth.

"Leave me alone," she said as she shuddered, still gripping tightly to Terry.

Terry had frozen for just a second, not having expected Dennis to actually do anything. "Get off her!" he shouted, tugging at Sophia to try to get her away without hurting her, but Dennis was too strong. He pointed his wand at the only part of Dennis he could aim at without risking hitting Sophia.

"Incen..." he started, but Dennis jerked Sophia back just enough so that if Terry continued the spell, it would hit Sophia and not Dennis. Sophia clutched more tightly at him, and he fumbled the wand, tugging Sophia away as much as he could, and aimed once more at Dennis.

Dennis was only inches away from that throbbing pulse in Sophia's neck when he heard Terry start a spell, and he pulled her to stand in the way of Terry's wand.

A hiss escaped his lips and he let go of Sophia, leaping towards Boot and snatching the wand out of his hand, hearing a very satisfying snap as the wand broke. He let out a soft laugh, pushing Terry down to the ground with a forceful shove.

He was back on Sophia in a flash, Boot completely forgotten. His grip on Sophia's arm was tight as he sunk his fangs into her neck.

She was so sweet, and Dennis' eyes nearly rolled back in his head as he slowly drank the sweet blood from her veins. It was all he could do not to drain her completely now, and the thought of turning her crossed his mind as her struggling made her blood flow more quickly.

When she felt Dennis' grip go slack as he went after Terry, Sophia attempted to get away, but he was back in a flash. She shrieked when she felt his fangs pierce her flesh, and she struggled against him, beating his chest with her fists.

Tears were streaming down her face as she tried to pull away from Dennis. She was getting desperate.

"Dennis, got off of me! Stop it!"

She was beginning to feel herself getting weaker, and she cried out in desperation, pushing Dennis as hard as she could.

Terry couldn't react as Dennis pushed him away and snapped his wand, though he swore he was able to feel as the connection between his wand and himself was destroyed. He fell hard to the ground, head bouncing against the pavement, with a loud crack. He couldn't move for a moment, but Sophia's cries of terror soon had him stumbling to his feet, lurching towards Dennis.

He tried to cast Incendio, aiming for the back of Dennis' bent head, but only managed to conjure a few sparks, nothing near enough to set anything on fire. Tears of frustration and terror pricked at his eyes and he desperately threw himself at Dennis and Sophia, hoping to knock Dennis off balance enough to get Sophia away.

He connected with them, and wrapped his arms around Sophia, pulling her hard one way and pushing Dennis in the other direction.

Dennis took a deep breath, his fangs driving deeper directly into Sophia's vein as he made a momentary decision. He couldn't get enough of her like this, but he had fallen in love with her from when he was only thirteen. As much as she said she despised him, she would thank him when he turned her.

For at that moment, he knew he wanted to do that, and nothing else. She would be a worthy companion for him for eternity, and she would see just how wonderful this existence was. His fangs pierced her artery, and he moaned as her struggles brought the flow of blood pulsing harder.

Lost in his feeding, he felt himself pulled away, and his fangs were torn from her neck. He screeched in anger as he felt Sophia's neck tear out from under him, and hot blood spill out across his face.

Boot had pulled them apart. Dennis was enraged that he had the audacity to do that. Sophia was on the ground behind Terry, and he could see she was bleeding. He needed to get back to her before her heart stopped beating.

Growling with rage, he picked Boot up with one hand, his hand fisting in his robes. He threw him back against a tree, hearing a satisfying crack as he turned back to Sophia, suddenly feeling desperate and helpless as she lay bleeding, her blood trickling onto the ground.

Sophia hit the ground hard, her vision fading for a moment. She weakly lifted her hand to her neck, trying to cover up the wound to stop the blood flow. She tried to scream out when Dennis threw Terry against a tree, but she couldn't find her voice.

When Dennis walked over to her again, she shook her head at him and attempted to scoot away from him.

"Don't touch me," she whispered, looking up at him with hate.

Dennis watched as the blood was seeping between Sophia's fingers. He hated to see it wasted like that. So filled with fury at Boot, he thought for a moment about going back and draining the annoying bastard.

But if left untreated like that Sophia was going to die. A rising sense of... concern... welled up inside him as he realised that she would die. He didn't want that for her - he wanted her beside him.

Kneeling down, he tried to stop her moving. "Stop moving, you're making the blood flow faster," he said to her in the closest thing to his old and concerned voice.

He saw the look in her eyes and tried to ignore it. "Listen, I can help you. You'll die if you lie there bleeding long enough. Let me help. Let me turn you and you'll live." His wrist was already at his mouth, ready to bite himself to give her the blood she would need.

Sophia's fingers tightened around the wound.

"Go to hell."

She'd rather die than let him turn her into a vampire. She had stopped trying to move, though; she'd just gotten too weak. She closed her eyes as tears welled up, and for the first time she realised that she was going to die.

She called out to Terry, needing him with her.

Terry came too slowly, aware of the fiery pain in his shoulder. He gasped as he felt the bones in his shoulder slide against each other, nearly biting through his lip to keep from screaming.

He opened his eyes, hissing at the pain, and his vision blurred. He could just make out Sophia, clutching at her neck and Dennis grabbing at her, and knew he had to stop him. He would crawl to her if he had to.

He heard her call to him, and slowly made his way to her, whimpering from the pain. He had to reach her, had to keep Dennis from killing her--or worse.

But his head was fuzzy, and the pain in his shoulder made him nauseous, and he barely kept from vomiting. He thought he blacked out again for a few minutes, because the next time he looked up, Sophia was on the ground, clutching her neck, and Dennis' words floated to him.

Let me turn you and you'll live.

"No!" Terry tried to shout, but the action made his shoulder feel worse, and it came out in a rasp. He tried to crawl closer, needing to get to her. Knowing she was dying.

Dennis turned when he heard the rasping voice. Boot was a fighter, and at any other time, he would have laughed.

But he turned back to Sophia, seeing the hatred in her eyes, and that stubborn look he knew so well. He wanted to turn her so badly, but then he wanted to keep her alive so he could feed from her again.

This was all one big fat mess. It was all Boot's fault. There was a feral look in his eye, and he knew that if he did that, then Terry would come for him at Honeydukes. Everyone knew where he lived.

Fuck.

He turned back to Sophia, one final look of regret and remorse as he knew that she would never willingly agree to let him turn her. He could hear her pulse weakening, knowing that it would soon be gone. Had he the capacity to cry, he would be doing so now. Instead, he felt a distinct sense of waste. A waste of blood, and a waste of a worthy companion for eternity.

In the end, she really was a fool. He shook his head. She would never have enough dark desire to survive as a vampire, no matter how much he would want her to. She was not as driven by the dark as he had always been, and he lamented that fact.

Tasting her blood still on his lips, he blew her a kiss. "Goodnight my dear," he said, the remorse in his voice.

He gave Boot a daring look as he saw him crawling in their direction, and just simply laughed. He turned, fleeing, not looking back at what would be a sight of pathetic emotion.

He could lick his own wounds in peace. But not at home. That would be the first place Terry would look. But he had enough time to go back and get some things.

He ran as fast as his legs could go, hoping to get home, then to Gloucestershire before dawn.
