Terry and Sophia had had a long, but pleasing, day, following what had been a wonderful Friday afternoon, picnicking with Ben in the Room of Requirement. Today, though, Terry had left Ben with Oliver, and taken Sophia on a surprise shopping trip, finally using the five random items he'd given her at her birthday dinner. They'd been to all the major shopping capitals: London, Paris, Rome, Prague (where he wouldn't mind returning to sometime with Severus) and New York. Terry had thought ahead and created Portkeys (secretly) and surprised Sophia with the trip that morning. They'd toured both Muggle and Wizarding sections, spending most of the their time in the Muggle areas of the places they'd visited.

Terry had especially loved New York, and wished they'd been able to spend more than a few hours there. He'd made Sophia promise that they could bring Ben back closer to Christmas, so he could see the tree in Rockefeller Center that the nice clerk at a particularly cozy used book shop had been kind enough to inform the British tourists about. He also wanted to bring Ben to Paris, to see the Eifle Tower at night, and to Prague to see the Astronomical Clock. He'd made Sophia promise them a weekend during the Christmas Holidays for that too.

They'd come away with a substantial amount of new clothes, accessories and, most importantly in Terry's opinion, books - both Muggle and Wizard. He'd been ecstatic to find an extremely rare copy of a 12th century Tibetan Monk's manuscript on summoning charms in nearly its original form. Sophia had teased him about being a complete geek, but he'd just beamed at her and kissed her forehead happily. He'd never really known there were so many bookshops and he had a feeling they'd barely managed to peruse a tenths of the ones out there. Needless to say, their pockets and bags were nearly filled to overflowing with shrunken and feather-light packages.

Their stomachs were also over stuffed. They'd lunched on cheese and baguettes in Paris, street-side pretzels and hot dogs in New York, numerous Mediterranean dishes in Rome. Terry was almost surprised to find that he really liked hot dogs, especially dripping with onions, ketchup and mustard. It was no wonder, though, Americans were so unhealthy, eating food like that everyday couldn't be good for the internal organs. Sophia had laughed at him again when he'd said that, so he'd had no choice but to eat her hot dog as well, laughing at her when she pouted at him.

Finally, they'd Portkeyed back to Hogsmeade, and made their final stop, Eloise Midgen's bookshop. Terry was ashamed to say he hadn't been in there yet, and couldn't imagine why when he finally saw what she had to offer.

"This place is great!" he exclaimed to Sophia, still feeling pretty euphoric from their day. "Why haven't we come here yet?"

"Don't you do this, Sophia!" he cried, suddenly angry-at her, at himself, at Dennis. "You're stronger than I am, you can come through this." He kissed her temple, her cheek, ignoring the blood though the thought of it made him sick. He had to be strong though, had to save her. "I'm not going to let you leave me too."

He sniffed deeply, and struggled finally to his feet, pointing his shaking hand towards her and saying, as clearly as he could, "Levicorpus." Trembling, nearly collapsing back the ground, he started forward, legs trembling beneath him, his shoulder protesting every movement.

"It's not far, Soph," he mumbled. "We'll get there, soon, and the Healers will help you. They won't let you leave me. I won't let you. Not when I can save you, not when it was my fault Dennis' bite went so wrong." He replayed the moment he'd torn Dennis away, and couldn't get the sound of his teeth tearing into her jugular, in his mind there was even more blood. "Come on, Soph, tell me you're still here."

Sophia saw the ground move from under her, and she realised that she was in the air following Terry. She struggled to hear what he was saying, feeling herself fading in and out.

Her eyes began to droop, and she watched Terry through her eyelashes. She was still hanging on, but only just. She listened to Terry, but only one phrase really stood out for her.

"Not your fault," she stated simply, just loud enough for him to hear her.

And then, suddenly, everything went black and she was gone.

Terry had to concentrate on not falling, on not dropping Sophia, but it was hard. His shoulder reminded him with every step what had happened, and the nausea was getting worse. His head felt like it would split open, and he was now aware of the dried blood that had run down his neck. But that wasn't important now. He had to help Sophia. Had to get her to the Shack. The Healers would help. There was no way she was dead yet, he wouldn't let it happen.

"Come on, Soph, keep talking baby," he sobbed, stumbling over the cobblestoned pavement. Why was no one around? Why was no one helping? "We're almost there, it's just up the hill." He took a shuddering breath and forced himself to keep going, training his wand on Sophia as steadily as he could. "We're going to be okay, Soph, we're going to get fixed right up, and go home, and pile in bed with Ben and we're going to be okay. I promise."

He couldn't bring himself to look at her, knowing that if he did he would lose all strength. As long as he didn't know he could still hope, still think that everything was going to be fine. So he kept his gaze to the ground, carefully making his way forward, up the hill, looking up every now and then to see if anyone was around, if anyone could help. But they were alone, even the Aurors were somewhere else.

"Almost there, Soph," he said, his voice hoarse. "I can almost see the Shack. We're almost there, and they're going to fix you right up, and we'll be fine, and be able to go home." He stumbled, finally losing his balance and crashed to the ground painfully, unable to get his hands out to protect his face, and he heard the crunch of bones as his nose met the cobblestones, but he didn't lose grip of his wand, clutching it tightly.

Cormac was just starting his patrol, and was nearing the Shack when he saw Terry Boot stumbling down the street. He was about to call out to see if the man needed help when he noticed the body floating in the air near him, and saw Terry crash to the ground. He started running towards them, drawing his wand as he went, and crouched near Terry, taking in the injured shoulder, and bloody nose. He quickly stablized Terry's shoulder, to keep it from moving and getting any worse than it was.

He could do nothing to heal the bones, that was the Healer's job, and staunched the bleeding to his nose. He looked towards the other body, knowing immediately that it was Sophia, and she was dead. There was no way someone could survive their jugular vein being nearly torn out.

"Fuck," he swore, and moved to Terry's uninjured shoulder, placing his own shoulder under Terry and lifting him from the ground. "Terry, come on, we have to get you to the Shack," he said, wincing as Terry struggled against him, hating the wounded animal look in Terry's eyes. "Hold still, you have to get help."

"No, Sophia!" Terry said, pushing at Cormac. "Sophia needs help. I'm okay, we have to help Sophia." He was crying again, maybe he'd never stopped, and he pushed Cormac towards Sophia. "Help her. Please."

He struggled to his feet, ignoring Cormac's offer of help, and blinked as his head spun, barely keeping from falling over again. "If you're not going to help her, get out of here."

He started forward again, knowing he was nearly at the shack, nearly where they could help Sophia. Just a few more meters, he could see the Shack now, and help was right beyond the doors.

"Sophia's de..." Cormac started, but he couldn't finish. Terry's eyes were wild, and Cormac could see the single-minded need to get Sophia to the shack, and anything he said wasn't going to deter Terry from that.

"Okay, let me carry her," he said gently, knowing it was more important to just get Terry to the shack. He was the one who needed help, Sophia was beyond that now.

Terry nodded, and Cormac went to Sophia, placing his arms under her body as Terry lowered the charm. "I've got her," he said softly, keeping his tone even to try to calm Terry. "I'm right here, Terry, let's get you both to the shack."

"Good, that's good," Terry said, lowering his wand. He swayed on his feet, but managed not to fall again, and forced his feet to start moving. he couldn't stop now, not when they were so close.

"She's going to be okay, you know," he said to Cormac as they made their way to the Shack. "She's strong, and the Healers will help her. She's going to be okay." If he kept saying it, it would be true.

Finally they arrived at the Shack, and Terry fumbled with the door, needing to get it open so Cormac could get Sophia inside. He followed inside after them and saw two Mediwitches and a Healer heading for them.

"You have to help her," he said to them, leaning against the wall and sliding down as his legs finally gave out. "You have to help her."

Augustus had been at the end of the entryway, surveying one of his patient's paperwork when the door opened. When he looked up and saw how much blood there was between the three people in the doorway, he placed the paperwork down on the counter and rushed over to them, moving immediately to the girl.

He very soon found that her heart was no longer beating, and he moved quickly on to the brunette man who had a bit of his collar bone peaking out of his shirt.

He immediately summoned a gurney and turned to Terry. "I need you to calm down. I'm going to give you a potion that will make you go to sleep, and then we'll go ahead and get you fixed up, okay?" One of the mediwitches brought him the potion, and he held the vial in front of Terry.

Terry shook his head. "No. No, you have to help her!" he cried, pushing away the vile of sleeping potion. "Help her!" he screamed, struggling to get off the gurney, and to Sophia.

"You're not even doing anything!" he shouted. "There has to be something. Please, help her. She can't die!"

Why didn't they understand? Sophia needed help more than he did, he could wait. They needed to save her, before it was too late.

Augustus hated to see people like this. The man was obviously in denial that his friend was dead. Nevertheless, he called another one of the healers over and had him go into another room with the girl, hoping it would get the man to relax.

"She's taken care of, now please, drink the potion." He raised the vial to the man's lips, wanting to give him another chance to drink it on his own before Augustus poured it into his mouth himself.

Terry breathed in relief when the other Healer rushed Sophia to another room. He wanted to be with her, but knew that the Healers would work best alone.

"Thank you," he whispered, slumping back against the pillow, exhaustion washing over him. He opened his mouth and let the potion pour down his throat.

Before blackness could overtake him, he looked at Cormac. "Get Stephen, please? I need him to be here. He can watch out for Sophia," he whispered to the Auror, looking at him hopefully.

And then the potion washed over him, and the last thing he remembered before closing his eyes was Cormac nodding.

When Augustus was certain that the man was asleep, he quickly made his way to an empty room, levitating the gurney behind him. Once inside, he called for a mediwitch, and they soon began working on healing the man. He muttered a spell under his breath that allowed him to see all the injuries that he was dealing with, and he examined Terry thoroughly.

The most serious injury by far was the broken collar bone, and Augustus was quite thankful for it. Mending bones was easy. He set to work quickly, and soon Terry's body was as healed as it was going to get.

The man's psyche, however...well, that might be another story. He pulled out his notepad and wrote himself a reminder to contact one of the hospital's on-call therapists, and then he left the room, the mediwitch following closely behind him.
