RP: The Ligthing Ceremony
Date: 8 December 2005 (It's already Saturday in Oz)
Characters: The Cornfoot, Adrian, the Malfoys, Rodolphus, anyone and everyone who wants to come.
Location: Cornfoot Manor in Yorkshire
Private/Public: Public
Rating: TBA
Warnings: TBA
Summary: It's my party and I cry if I want to.
Completion: Complete

William had always followed in his father's footsteps, and the Lighting Ceremony was no exception. However this was one tradition he didn't mind to uphold. They had taken Elizabeth out of school the day before to stay at the manor. Stephen and Adrian had chosen to stay there too. In the morning they had had breakfast together, before helping the house elves with the decorations. This was the one day of the year when everyone was the same. There were no differences between purebloods and Muggleborns, wizards and Muggles or even house elves. It was something that Charles had stressed and William had learnt at a young age.

In the afternoon, they had gone to the chapel for the Mass, before heading off to where the party would be. They had set up, as usual, right in the middle of the park, the only flat land with a perfect view of all the trees. There was Christmas music echoing through the land. One year, one of the Muggles had congratulated them for the great surround system. William still wasn't sure exactly what a surround system was, but as long as the Muggles had an explanation for what was going on, he wouldn't correct them. There were tables set up with hot cider and tea. Everything was self-services since the Muggles didn't know about the house elves, and the house elves had a day off and their own private party from where they could see the lightening of the trees.

As dusk, father Luke said the blessing, and finally when the sun went down, the lights came alive. Every tree in the land lit up creating an amazing game of colours. The Muggles always laughed about their electricity bill and William had learnt to complain with a smile, and not mentioning the amount of magic involved to keep everything lit until the Epiphany. It didn't matter anyway, because this represented the start of a perfect holiday.

The crowd at this thing was always impressive, Cass thought, smiling as he walked through it, keeping his eyes open for Pansy or Percy, as he was fairly sure both would be here.

He smiled as a pretty muggle brushed against him, only casually glancing at his 'odd' clothes. Odd clothes indeed - real clothes - real silk. Expenive, exclusive silk.

Fucking hell he adored Pansy.

The feel of the silk against his skin when he moved was enough to keep him in a good mood, and the champagne and food didn't hurt. He looked out over the trees, waiting for them to light with the same enthusiasm as he had when he was a kid.

Anthony walks with Megan, a smile as his face as they walked through the crowd and mingled. It had been a while since he'd been to an event like this, and had to admit that the ceremony was quite a spectacular one. The trees looked wonderful, decorated in all matter of light and colour.

He kept one hand on his wand. Just because he was in the spirit did not mean he wasn't cautious.

He turned and flashed a smile at Megan. "Having a good time?" he asked, looking around. "Have you seen Kevin yet? He said he was going to be here. Swore on it, in fact."

Ernie wandered through the crowd with a smile on his face a cup of hot cider in his hand. He almost hadn't come tonight but now he was glad he'd let his sense of duty get the better of his tiredness and desire to mope for a bit. The Cornfoots always did a good job on this and while he hadn't been for a few years, it was still as good as he remembered.

He also liked the the Cornfoots didn't restrict it to just magical people. There were as many Muggles as magical people here and he had to laugh a bit at how they managed to explain the magic that they saw. Ernie knew enough of the Muggle world to know that if the Cornfoots had been doing this in the Muggle fashion their electrical bill would probably be enough to pay off the national debt.

He smiled and nodded to a young couple as he passed them though they were really too involved in each other to notice him. He laughed softly and continued wandering.

Miles had picked up Liam and Ella from Rosmerta. He was still worried about Millicent, but he figured that she could take care of herself. He was surprised at the lack of protest from Ella when he told her that Mummy wasn't feeling well, and that he was going to take them to the party, then they could have a sleepover in Liam's bedroom.

He had remembered such parties from when he was much younger, and there was a sense of innocence and wonder, seeing it freshly through his son's eyes. Much easier to think about it that way than to remember the face on Charles Cornfoot from when he was much younger. The hot cider went down well as he kept his focus on his son, and on Ella.

Liam was so wide eyed with wonder, Miles managed to find a smile (well, a satisfied smirk) on his face as they walked through the crowd. Everything took on a new meaning when Liam pointed it out for the first time.

Making sure the children both had a drink, and some sandwiches, he looked around for some familiar faces in the crowd.

Tracey had decided to forgo the glamour charms for once and go out looking pregnant. She felt... Well, rather brilliant at four months along and although the baby could kick until she felt sick with it, he or she had been quiet so far this evening. She'd bundled up in her warmest robes though, it was cold even for December, and although she'd already lost Draco to the crowds and interesting people, she was having a good time.

Picking up a cup of tea, she took a sandwich too and took a bite, looking around the place. She could see Draco and she thought Pansy but the presence of so many Muggles confused her a little, putting her off of her stride.

Keeping her hand on her bump, she started to mingle, hoping she'd see somebody she knew soon.

Fleur held Charlotte's hand and would have preferred to hold Luc's hand but he flat out refused to let her. He'd told her he was a big boy and didn't need it. It didn't stop Fleur from putting a charm on him when he wasn't looking. It would allow him his freedom but not let him go too far from her. There were just too many people here and she wasn't taking any chances.

Charlotte and Lucas were both amazed by all the lights and the people. Fleur had always loved Christmas and seeing it through the children's eyes was even better.

Luc and Char both wanted hot cider so they went to the table to get some food and drink and once that was done they started wandering around again.

Adrian snagged two cups of cider and moved over to where Stephen was, passing him one. He'd been amazed at the lights and the music and even if he would never, ever admit it, he kind of liked the Christmas thing. It was certainly... Fun. The children loved it too and seeing the looks on Elizabeth and Henry's faces, not to mention Violet's and the younger children's made the effort and magic involved worthwhile.

He turned slightly, kissing Stephen chastely. "You were right. I'm having a good time," he admitted, leaning into him a little. "Even if it is fucking freezing."

Severus kept to the edge of the crowd, one hand on Faustus' shoulder in a firm grip. He hadn't been planning on coming to the Cornfoot's ceremony due to the possible danger but Faustus had apparently heard all about it from Violet in enthusiastic detail and when he'd said no, Faustus had glared at him and sulked audibly, something that had only gotten worse when Draco, Tracey and Violet had left.

He wasn't quite sure what had made him finally capitulate but he suspected that memories of his own rather neglected childhood had had something to do with it. The lightening ceremony was something he would have liked to go to as a child, even if he would have sneered and been scornful as a cover.

Whatever the reason, they were here now and whenever he looked down, Faustus was staring at the trees or the people with open delight and fascination, making him feel that he'd made the right decision no matter how nervous and edgy it made him. Severus was keeping his wand close at hand though, he was not going to take any risks with either of them.

Daphne loved winter, and today's weather was remarkable. The air was cool and brisk against her flawlessly polished skin, but not frigid. She had on warm robes of sapphire blue, and had wrapped her son up in a complimenting lavender. She held Nigel close to her body to make sure he was warm. For the moment, he was napping against her, and he had been much more tolerable lately. Daphne hoped that he was past his crying constantly stage, and today would be a good day to test that. Regardless, she had her wand if she needed to either cast a warming spell to keep him happy, or even a silencing charm if she needed to make a hasty, but quiet, exit.

Although she preferred an indoor and more extravagant party, the light displays were still something to gaze at. Besides, this would tide her over for now.

She glanced around the area, looking for a familiar face. Surely, she would be able to catch up with some old friends tonight.

Percy didn't want to be here; he didn't want to be near so many people, because people were illogical and they got even worse during the holidays. He truly wished it could be January and all this Christmas nonsense was over. Unfortunately, it was still December and this ceremony was an event for the wizarding community, and he felt he had to be there to represent the Aurors office.

He managed to stay away from anyone that required anything other than a few words and a couple of nods. It was perfect. Of course, there was one person who always managed to change his plans. "Vaisey, good to see you," he said with a smile. "You look very... rich."

Montague was worried, but they couldn't just stay hidden away, and it was not only tradition for someone of the MOntague family to go and represent, but he'd promised Miles he would show up. At first he'd tried to somehow convince himself that it would be alright if they didn't go, or just one of them went; but considering that if they weren't together questions would be brought up, and then when Marlowe living with them did become public...it may have looked like an action of guilt.

Which was why, he was with Verity and Marlowe between them standing amoungst the beautifully lit lights of the Cornfoot land.

2007-12-08 19:21 (link) DeleteFreezeScreen
Rodolphus looked around the group of Death Eaters gathered in front of the manor. He'd been surprised but very pleased when he'd heard that William Cornfoot was going ahead with his lightening ceremony. He knew from the times he'd gone many, many years ago that this was a very open event with even Muggles invited. Why the Cornfoots stooped to that level was beyond him but it did mean that the wards on the grounds would be minimal or non-existent.

"Remember that I want William Cornfoot, Adrian Pucey and Stephen Cornfoot taken alive," he said in a voice that brooked no disobedience. "If Severus Snape is there, I want him alive as well. If they are later reported as dead, I will find the culprit and deal with them." He gave his wife a sharp look. "Everyone else is a target, especially the Muggles." He gave the group another long look then nodded. "Let's go."

He pulled his wand out and apparated to the Cornfoot estate. He;d left where his people wanted to arrive up to them but for himself he chose the edge of the clearing that he knew existed in the middle of the grounds. There was a crowd of Muggles and wizards and witches milling around and he laughed at how easy it was going to be. He quickly shielded himself then raised his wand and cast the Incendio into the nearest trees, laughing as they burst into flames then apparating to another part of the clearing and casting the same spell at the nearest group of people, not caring if they were Muggles or magical people.

Bellatrix tapped her foot impatiently as her husband spoke. She cracked each of her knuckles in turn, getting her fingers warmed up for the coming slaughter. When he gave her a piercing look, she merely raised her brows in response. She could easily control herself if she ran into Pucey or the Cornfoots. Resisting to torture and kill Snape if she came up him would be difficult, but she knew she'd get the chance eventually if he were caught. Besides, there would be plenty of targets to keep her occupied here.

Her shields went up just before she apparated to the center of the park. As the muggles' and wizard's eyes widened in recognition, she gave them a foreboding smirk. "Miss me?"

Her wand flashed through the air, and several flashes of green light crackled toward the three individuals close to her. They dropped dead before they could even scream. Bellatrix smiled as the chorus of terror began and people scattered from her in all directions.

It was good to be back.

Draco was too used to paying attention to what was happening around him, even when he looked like he didn't have a clue. Even if he hadn't, it was difficult to miss the Incendio, setting the trees on fire, right before his aunt arrived.

He looked around to see where Violet was. It wasn't difficult since she's spent most of the night talking to Henry. He Apparated to where she was, grabbing her and Henry. He didn't even think of running. There were too many people screaming and running everywhere. Instead he Apparated to where he'd seen Tracey talk to Evelyn.

"Take him inside," he told Evelyn, before picking up Violet and Tracey, and Apparating straight to the Manor. He knew Severus would do the same thing. Hopefully, the other wizards and witches would do the same.

Lisa listened as Rodolphus gave his instructions. She had been to the Cornfoots lightening ceremony was she was a little girl, only when her parents made her. She had been disgusted by the Muggles then. She would follow the instructions about those to be left alive. She wasn't stupid but she did like hurting her fellow Ravenclaws. She figured there would be others to hurt.

She put up her shields and Apparated into the party. She could hear the screams and smiled. She pointed her wand to the first group of Muggles she could find. She had done to modifications to her drowning spell that she used to torture. This one would cause the person to actually drown in their own fluids. She cast the spell on two of them and watched as the effects hit them. The a teenager from the looks stared in shock. She used the Entrail-Expelling curse on that one.

She walked off leaving them there to die slowly. She wanted to see who else she could play with.

Severus glanced over the crowd when the trees on the other side of the clearing burst into flames. He caught sight of a very unpleasant and familiar face for a moment and he swore. He'd made his decision about what he would do in this sort of situation before they'd left to come here and he did not hesitate now.

"Get the Muggles out and stay out of the Death Eaters' way," he snapped to Stephen. "They'll be after you, William and Adrian."

He pulled Faustus close to him and wrapped his arms around his son before apparating them both back to Malfoy Manor. He had no intention of returning to Cornfoot Manor either. His son had already lost one parent, he did not need to risk losing both.

Stephen didn't have the time to roll his eyes or he would have. Snape was so great at stating the obvious. At least he knew that Adrian was inside the manor and safe. He looked around and saw Evelyn take care of Henry and Andrew.

He regretted not having his broom. He needed to find Elizabeth and her friends in this mess. He ran through the crowd. Stay out of the Death Eaters' way. Easier said than done, not when people were dying without knowing what was happening.

Still he couldn't stop, he needed to find Elizabeth before taking care of the Muggles. Still as he ran he saw a boy trying to run away. Stephen ran to him, and Apparated away with him. He barely had time to leave him with another Muggle at the far side of the park and to tell them to run, before he was Apparating back, trying to find his niece.

Fleur was walking around with the children. She had relaxed a little and let Char walk ahead of her with Luc. He was actually being sweet and holding her hand. She was going to have to tell him how proud of him she was later.

She heard the screams and looked up and saw the trees on fire. Her blood ran cold. She heard Charlotte scream when she saw the fire. They weren't that far away from it. She ran to her and picked her up holding her close. She looked down at Lucas and took his hand. "What ever you do Lucas do not let go of my 'and." She saw him nod and could see how scared he was too. "I am going to Apparate us out of 'ere."

With hands on both of her children she did just that getting all three of them to safety.

Megan and Anthony had been having a lovely time. Right now they were standing together his arms around her. She heard the screams and saw the fire. She was confused at first but she felt Anthony tense behind her and that is what scared her the most.

She didn't know what to do and looked at Anthony with fear in her eyes. "What the hell is going on?"

The sudden sound of Apparation caught his attention, then the trees - and people - were on fire. Screams, people running in panic, more Apparaitions, children almost being trampled. Fuck!

Seeing a crying child sitting down on the ground, too many adults around, too many not looking to where they ran. Cass didn't think twice to run up to the child and pick him up, casting a hex at the first Death Eater he saw. Then he cast another spell - his patronus - to the first person that came to mind.

If there was a fight he wanted Susan by his side.

And damn if anyone ruined his robes.

It was sheer luck that Liam and Ella were very close when he heard the screaming, and saw the trees ablaze.

A very familiar cackle was heard and he saw the green flashes of the killing curse. Fuck! Had there been an attack he was supposed to know about? If it had been, then he would not have brought the children.

But Liam cried out and his eyes widened as he saw the flames. Miles instantly picked both children up, carrying one under each arm. They were not safe here.

He looked around for any other children, but saw people running everywhere. He noticed Draco disapparate, and he also saw Margaret. As much as he probably was expected to join in on this attack, the children were there, and he didn't want them to be involved.

"Come on, we're going somewhere safe," he said to them quickly. "A special place where you can sleep in a grand bed!"

Spotting Margaret, he yelled across to her. "I'm taking them to the Manor - get yourself there if you need to."

A second later, just as he spotted a killing curse whizzing far too close for comfort, he Apparated away, quickly landing in the foyer of Bletchley Manor.

They'd be safe her. Safer than anywhere else. He put the children down, seeing the worry on Liam's face, and looking at Ella. "Well Ella, looks like we'll get to spend the night here in the Manor."

His heart was still thumping, and he held both their hands tight as he sat down on the bottom step for a moment. That had been close. Too close, and now he had two possibly scared children with him. Of course they were scared. He'd been shit terrified by the fact that Bellatrix and Rodolphus nearly killed him, and his son. No provocation, no warning even.

He didn't know if he was scared, or angry.

Kingsley was just picking Val up so she could better see the lights, laughing at Hestia's joke when everything seemed to turn to chaos. He swore under his breath and handed Val to Hestia quickly. "Take her home and you stay there." He knew his tone was commanding but he also knew he could trust Hestia in a chain of command when it was an emergency. "I'll make sure Ginger is out of here now go!" he commanded.

As soon as they were gone he drew his wand and sent an alert to Order members and the office, in hopes there were others who could help. Then he went into the fight, wishing he was in uniform instead of the heavy cloak and holiday robes.

He had the cider in hand, in process of handing over to Marlowe, when the crack of a branch and then fire seemed to shoot up from no where. The proceeding screams then tipped him off. The screams and those that he recognized all too well.

Fuck.

Weren't these things supposed to be told to them?! So they didn't bring their familes?! Almost immediately scooping Marlowe up, who looked both surprised and terrified (though he wasn't sure if the latter was because of who he was or the carnage already going on around them) he was rushing to Verity who had only been a few steps away.

Handing him off, he gave her a desperate look. "Go. Take him home. Please. I need to find Miles and the kids." Leaning in he kissed her hard before spinning away, he needed to make sure that Liam and Ella were safe as well, as he knew they tended to wander off...

Ernie had been wandering amongst the trees when he heard what sounded like something exploding and then the sound of screaming. He froze where he was standing, his eyes widening as he peered through the trees, trying to see what was going on.

He pulled his wand out and step by hesitant step he headed towards the screaming. He finally reached a point where he could see the clearing and it was a scene of chaos. There were people running in all directions, there were trees on fire then there, walking calmly through the crowd, he could see... them.

They were here. Lestrange and Turpin. His breathing quickened and he stared at them, fear rising rapidly. He felt like he should help, try and save some of the Muggles but all he could see was them. He shook his head and knew he couldn't stay. He couldn't face them. He stumbled backwards a few steps then abruptly apparated away.

Adrian had gone back for coffee when he heard the screams, house elves suddenly piling into the kitchen. All of them were squealing, fear in their eyes and Adrian couldn't make sense of what they were telling him until he looked outside, grabbing onto the counter hard when he saw the fires and the hexes, people scrambling for cover.

Dropping the coffee down, he didn't hesitate to Apparate into their rooms, panicking when he didn't see Stephen. He knew he'd think he had some sort of... Obligation to the Muggles but he expected to keep himself safe.

Instead he Apparated outside, about to raise his wand when he found himself unable to take another step. He looked around and glared when he saw Jeff. "Stephen's out there," he said by way of explanation, getting furious when Jeff didn't remove the spell. "Fucking hell, don't get all Gryffindor on me, Jeff. I'm an Auror the same as you."
