William had always followed in his father's footsteps, and the Lighting Ceremony was no exception. However this was one tradition he didn't mind to uphold. They had taken Elizabeth out of school the day before to stay at the manor. Stephen and Adrian had chosen to stay there too. In the morning they had had breakfast together, before helping the house elves with the decorations. This was the one day of the year when everyone was the same. There were no differences between purebloods and Muggleborns, wizards and Muggles or even house elves. It was something that Charles had stressed and William had learnt at a young age.

In the afternoon, they had gone to the chapel for the Mass, before heading off to where the party would be. They had set up, as usual, right in the middle of the park, the only flat land with a perfect view of all the trees. There was Christmas music echoing through the land. One year, one of the Muggles had congratulated them for the great surround system. William still wasn't sure exactly what a surround system was, but as long as the Muggles had an explanation for what was going on, he wouldn't correct them. There were tables set up with hot cider and tea. Everything was self-services since the Muggles didn't know about the house elves, and the house elves had a day off and their own private party from where they could see the lightening of the trees.

As dusk, father Luke said the blessing, and finally when the sun went down, the lights came alive. Every tree in the land lit up creating an amazing game of colours. The Muggles always laughed about their electricity bill and William had learnt to complain with a smile, and not mentioning the amount of magic involved to keep everything lit until the Epiphany. It didn't matter anyway, because this represented the start of a perfect holiday.

Ernie shrugged and took a sip of his cider. "Most of the Muggles who work for us are extremely fascinated by magic for about six months then it starts to fall into the category of normal but extremely useful. Some of them have even tried to work out which is more efficient in terms of time, energy expended and efficiency - magic or Muggle methods. It's kind of the ongoing debate among the workers on the estate."

He smiled, a rather sly one that seemed kind of out of place of his face. "Oh, I'm not overly worried about that. When we tell them about magic, we also tell them that they can't let anyone know outside of the estate. They get very good at playing dumb with the villagers and with any witches or wizards who come to the estate." He suddenly dissolved into laughter. "Though some of them do take their 'village idiot' impressions a bit too far. Serious thespians, they are not."

Draco blinked. "Muggles are really strange," he said with a sigh. "Convenient at times, but strange. I've learnt to appreciate their food and clothing, but I can't say I deal with them a lot. Unless you count head of companies, those are pretty much the same, Muggles or wizards, they all are very similar to my father."

He rolled his eyes. "Really, but if you are admitting it, they don't need to say anything. I know Gryffindors aren't the brightest, but even they can figue that one out."

Ernie shrugged. "They're people, just like us. Some are good, some are bad, some are just strange. They just use technology instead of magic. With my new shop, I deal with a lot of farmers and I can tell you there's not much difference between magical and Muggle there."

He grinned. "Not much they can do if the Muggles don't admit to seeing magic and just dismiss our oddities as being eccentricities. And they never come into the house. The workers that do are all either magical or squibs." He shrugged, being careful not to slosh his drink. "It works and no one's ever questioned it. Helps that we're so far from anyone official."

He took a drink and looked at the brilliantly lit trees for a moment. "Not that I'm beyond pulling the pureblood card if it's needed to protect my estate and the people who work for me." There was a hint of superiority in his voice.

"That's all right; I find a lot of wizards strange as well." Draco smiled a little. "I wouldn't know about farmers of any kind. The closest I get to nature is riding my horse. You could call me spoilt; I wouldn't get upset. In fact it'd be a compliment."

Draco nodded. "Whatever floats your boat. I like my house elves, but obviously the Cornfoots agree with you. Then again, I don't know how they would take care of all of this without help."

He shrugged. "We are who we are. That's all."

"Well, most people thought my father was a bit strange," Ernie said with a rather wistful grin. "He was of the opinion that we might be purebloods and we might be wealthy but he'd be damned if we weren't going to understand the concept of honest hard work. I wasn't too pleased about that was I was younger but... depending on what you're doing, it can be very satisfying." He grinned and laughed. "Probably why I'm a Hufflepuff and you're a Slytherin."

"I have a few house elves though they've been very jumpy since... the attack." He grimaced. "They're also not happy about the blood wards but I don't give a damn about that. I want them so they'll just have to get used to it." He liked the family house elves but there was no way he was living in the house again without those wards so they would just have to get used to it.

Draco gasped. "Work? Do you mean real work? As in doing something to achieve a purpose? I don't know how I could ever do anything of the sort. No Slytherins could ever be interested in doing a hard day's work; they certainly aren't interested in honest hard work. They'd get around the honest or the hard, and possibly both," he said grinning.

"I understand completely. I changed my wards when I took possession of the house," he confessed. "I wasn't too keen in having unexpected relatives drop by the house. It's made for a much safer home."

Ernie laughed and thought it was a shame that Draco hadn't been more like this at school. He'd have been a lot easier to deal with. "I should hope your lot wouldn't be interested in a hard day's work," he said, feeling better than he had anytime since the attack. "Otherwise they wouldn't be Slytherins. We have Ravenclaws to think up the work, Slytherins to avoid the work but at the same time critique it, Gryffindors to nobly insist that they should be the ones doing the work while all the time they're skiving off and doing nothing and Hufflepuffs to get down and dirty and actually do the work." He grinned, knowing he was showing off the Hufflepuff attitude to the other Houses. "Because if we left it to any of the other Houses it would never get done and if it did, it wouldn't be any good."

He blinked for a moment then realised that Draco was talking about his father. He'd forgotten that Lucius was a Death Eater... or rather he'd allowed himself to not think about it. "Very wise of you. I haven't really let many people have access. It's altered the way things run around the estate but everyone's adjusting."

"Right, you keep telling yourself that." Slytherins were very good at working while pretending not to do anything. It was who they were and who they would always be. "I agree 100% with your analysis. Feel free to come to Escapism if you'd like some extra work, or the Bat's Wings. I'm always willing to let others work, and do it right."

Draco nodded. "Especially since recently my aunt decided to make an expected visit. Fortunately the wards kept her out. Adjusting is much better than the alternative."

Ernie laughed. "I'll pass, thanks. I have enough work on my plate as it is with the estate and my own shop."

He winced and shuddered at the thought of Bellatrix Lestrange turning up on his doorstep. Having Rabastan Lestrange turn up had been bad enough. "I've had more than my fill of the alternative," he said grimly as he rubbed absently at the burn scar on his chest. "My people will just have to learn that I am not my father and some things are now non-negotiable."

He glanced around the crowd. "I should let you get going. I know you like to circulate at these things and I think I need more cider."

"See, Hufflepuff talk and talk, but then when there is work, they find an excuse," he said laughing.

Draco patted Ernie's back. "They'll be fine. You do what you must to protect yourself." He looked at the crowd. "You're right, I need to spread the pleasure of my company around or people get jelous." Truthfully, he loved the parties, because it gave the opportunity to talk to people he usually wouldn't, like Ernie. It was amusing. "Don't be a stranger. You can always find me at the club." With a bow of his head, Draco moved away.
