RP: Time to move
Date: 13 December 2005
Characters: Draco, Severus, William, Adrian and Stephen
Location: Malfoy Manor, Johnstone Manor
Private/Public: Private
Rating: PG
Warnings: None
Summary: Draco tells them about the changes in the wards, and Severus decides it's time to rescue Stephen
Completion: Complete

The moment he saw the owl from Vince, Draco knew that there would be some news about Stephen. Whether bad or good, he didn't know, and was almost afraid to read, because he feared what Pucey would do if something went wrong. Draco really didn't need the man to screw up all the war efforts over one man. Still he had to know.

He opened the message and had to smile at Vince's lack of eloquence:

Draco,

I was at the Lestrange's and everything went fucking insane, like an explosion but not, and the wards for the manor were all fucked up. Lestrange was so pissed off that I left because I don't fancy the Cruciatus. There are rumours that there are no wards, or some wards or possibly all the wards, and some have said that Snape has tried to destory the house. Thing is no one knows for sure what's going on.

Is that helpful?

Vince

It certainly was helpful. No one in Upper Slaughter would have the courage to destroy the wards at his uncle's house. He wasn't sure that the idiots living up there would have had the knowledge. Since no one in the Order would have had access and he and Severus hadn't done anything, that left one person: Stephen Cornfoot.

Draco wrote two quick messages.

William,

I have news. Come to the manor immediately and bring Pucey on a leash. The house elves will show you in.

Draco

The second was even easier.

Vince,

It was very useful.

Draco

Having sent both owls, he Apparated upstairs to show Severus the owl from Vince.

"Since I'm most definitely not a Gryffindor, I thank you for doing this, Professor. However if you think we can help in any way, then tell us what we need to do." This was Stephen and he would do what necessary to get him back.

He clamped Adrian's shoulder, knowing that he had been on edge since Draco's message. "I can send my house elf to John. He'll come regardless of time and place."

Adrian frowned when Snape said that he wasn't allowed to go with him, ready to say something when William's hand clamped down on his shoulder, distracting him for a moment. He knew it was logical, that the more people there were, the more dangerous it would be but he didn't like it at all.

Then again, Stephen thought he was dead. Him turning up could cause all sorts of problems if Stephen thought somebody was using Polyjuice just to torment him.

"Where are you going to take him to? The manor?" he asked, looking at William. Adrian didn't want him here, not when he wasn't sure if Malfoy could keep his relatives out. "I- What can I do? I can't just sit here and do nothing. Come on, at least make an emergency Portkey so I can get there if you need help. You know I can duel and that I can kill, I'm hardly some fourth year Defense student," He held up his wand. "And Jeff gave me this back. He figured I could need it."

Severus scowled at Draco. "It has nothing to with any alleged Gryffindorish tendencies. None of you have the knowledge that I do of Upper Slaughter and the manor. This needs to be done quickly and quietly. If I do this right, the only way the Lestranges will know someone was there will be the absence of Stephen."

He nodded to William; the scowl easing. "Have that healer ready. I'll take what I can in the way of potions but as I'll need him conscious and alert, I won't be able to do more than the most basic of healing."

Severus finally turned his attention to Adrian. He had some sympathy for the man; he knew he'd be in much the same state, if not worse, if anything happened to Draco. But he didn't want to allow Adrian anywhere near the Lestrange right now.

"If the Lestranges catch me then adding you to the mix would do nothing more than give them another target and another captive," he said bluntly. "You will be needed most once we are out. The potions I intend to give him will leave him disoriented when they wear off. You will be needed to keep him calm and focussed while John is working."

He grimaced; he knew Malfoy Manor was safe but Johnstone Manor would be safer. He just wasn't entirely sure that he wanted to allow so many people access. However, given his own experience at Rodolphus' hands, Stephen may not be able to be moved for a few days and Narcissa was still lurking around the manor. "As for where to take him. It will have to be here since I will likely be apparating quickly. My own home would be far safer but unless this healer of yours can get here before I leave then that option cannot be used."

"I can get John here in a few moments, but I don't want to create you more problems. You could Apparate at the manor. John can be there, and I can change the wards so you can Apparate directly to Stephen's room," William said.

He looked at Adrian, and he knew that he would have liked the last solution, because it would have been easier for them, but he wasn't sure how well Snape could get there. He decided that it would start with the easiest part. He called for Bitsy, who Apparated next. "Go to John's and see that he gets here immediately."

"Yes, Master." The house elf disappeared, and William turned to Snape. "It's your choice now."

Severus paced for a moment as he thought through the possible scenarios, discarding some, taking others into more serious consideration. He'd learned to do this at almost lightening pace since the Dark Lord had had a tendency to through unexpected situations at him at a moment's notice. Finally it was the presence of Narcissa in the manor that decided him.

"My home," he said shortly. "I don't know your manor well enough to apparate there in a hurry or under... less than ideal circumstances. If Stephen is as injured as I suspect he may be then he will probably not be able to be moved for a few days. That rules out here as Narcissa is around periodically."

He paused and scowled. "My home is under the Fidelius. That is the reason for needing the healer here now. Let me go and get what I will need. Your healer should be here by then. I'll give you all access and Draco can take you there. Titchy will be able to get you anything you need once you are there."

He didn't wait for their agreement but instead stalked into his bedroom, waving a hand to open the chest that held his potions and started pulling out what he would need.

William knew that it wouldn't be so easy as Snape was making it sound. He doubted Stephen or Adrian would be willing to stay there for a few days. Evelyn and the children would complain also when he informed them that he couldn't see them, but he understood the reasoning. "All right, we'll go there."

He stopped when he heard the knock on the door, and John entered with his bag of potions and his air of urgency. "Did you find the poor boy?" he said as he stepped in, before realising just how many people there were. "Good evening, everyone. Draco, we need to stop meeting during emergency. Where is he?"

"He is not here yet," Severus said as he returned to the room, running through a mental list of what he had and what he needed to do once he was in Upper Slaughter. "Nor will he be coming here. Draco will be taking you to my home and I will bring Stephen there. I expect he will be... somewhat damaged."

He pulled on his rather voluminous black cloak then quickly gave William, Adrian and the healer the location of Johnstone Manor. He would let them explain what was going on to the healer.

"Draco will take care of you from here," he said grimly. "I won't be back with Stephen until after dark."

Once again he didn't wait for a response and apparated straight to his home in Upper Slaughter.
