RP: Time to move
Date: 13 December 2005
Characters: Draco, Severus, William, Adrian and Stephen
Location: Malfoy Manor, Johnstone Manor
Private/Public: Private
Rating: PG
Warnings: None
Summary: Draco tells them about the changes in the wards, and Severus decides it's time to rescue Stephen
Completion: Complete

The moment he saw the owl from Vince, Draco knew that there would be some news about Stephen. Whether bad or good, he didn't know, and was almost afraid to read, because he feared what Pucey would do if something went wrong. Draco really didn't need the man to screw up all the war efforts over one man. Still he had to know.

He opened the message and had to smile at Vince's lack of eloquence:

Draco,

I was at the Lestrange's and everything went fucking insane, like an explosion but not, and the wards for the manor were all fucked up. Lestrange was so pissed off that I left because I don't fancy the Cruciatus. There are rumours that there are no wards, or some wards or possibly all the wards, and some have said that Snape has tried to destory the house. Thing is no one knows for sure what's going on.

Is that helpful?

Vince

It certainly was helpful. No one in Upper Slaughter would have the courage to destroy the wards at his uncle's house. He wasn't sure that the idiots living up there would have had the knowledge. Since no one in the Order would have had access and he and Severus hadn't done anything, that left one person: Stephen Cornfoot.

Draco wrote two quick messages.

William,

I have news. Come to the manor immediately and bring Pucey on a leash. The house elves will show you in.

Draco

The second was even easier.

Vince,

It was very useful.

Draco

Having sent both owls, he Apparated upstairs to show Severus the owl from Vince.

"It is the best I have at the moment," Severus said. "If I had more time, I could try other options but unfortunately... this is what we have."

He nodded even though Stephen's eyes were closed then severed the first of the nails. He could see Stephen react, working hard not to scream and he knew that it would be better to work fast. He could not reduce the pain but he could get it done quickly and efficiently. He quickly moved on to the next nail, trying not to shift Stephen too much.

"Adrian is alive, free, unharmed and sorely tempting your brother to put him on a leash," he said dryly as he worked. "I believe William had to remove his wand at one point so that he would not do anything foolish. Since your antics have shattered the wards down here, I cannot determine precisely what once existed but I do know there are wards that can both detect and block a bond such as the one you shared with Adrian."

By this stage he had freed both arms though he kept them in the position they had been in, not wanting to stress the muscles were the nails were. He ducked down and began to work on Stephen's legs. He would leave Stephen's torso for last since that would be the most difficult section.

Stephen felt the tears fall down his face before he realised that he was crying. "He's alive? Oh God, I thought- I still can't feel him... the pain, the wards, I don't know. Just... I don't care how much damage you do, just get me out of here. I need to see him. Please."

He still couldn't believe Adrian was alive; he needed to be with him. However the description of his relationship with William made him smile. "That sounds like them. William has no patience and Adrian... he can test a saint when he wants to. You know I think we can use my 'antics' to destroy this town... I was thinking about it, not much to do... remind me to tell you when we get the hell out of here. Really, a little payback is in order."

Severus ignored Stephen's reaction as he continued to work. "The wards are gone but the pain may be having some effect. I doubt the bond is gone entirely though it may need to be repaired." He snorted. "Patience. If I rush this, I risk doing more damage. I have not gone to all this effort simply to break you now."

He arched an eyebrow as he finished Stephen's legs and started on his torso. This part was likely to be the worst. He would need to shift Stephen a little more to get access to some of the nails. He began with one shoulder and worked as quickly as he dared.

"You shattered the wards in the dungeons and damaged some but not all of the manor wards. You did not touch the town wards or the Fidelius at all," he said archly. "And I am sure the manor wards... expressed their displeasure with you before Rodolphus did the same."

He glanced down at the runes carved into the floor. He recognised a couple but runes had never been his forte. His skills lay in a different direction.

"Rodolphus has seen what you have done. He will guard against it as much as he can in the manor. The spell to stop someone carving into rock is easy enough," he continued. "He is insane but do not underestimate him. There is a substantial intellect underneath the insanity. But we will speak of this later. Any suggestion is valuable and may be of some use."

He moved Stephen forward a fraction, knowing that this would cause some pain then severed the last of the nails. He then gently lowered Stephen to the floor.

"I need to remove the nails otherwise you will not be able to move. It will be... exceedingly painful. Do you need me to silence you?"

"We'll see as soon as you're done," he answered, knowing that he should be a little more grateful. "I want to go home sooner rather than- than later." He gasped from the pain as Snape moved him. "Christ, I want one hour with him, no magic, no wands."

Talking hurt too, but he knew that if he stopped he wouldn't be able to stay conscious. The need to close his eyes and push away the pain was too alluring. "No, no runes... well yeah, but not the way you think. Combination of runes, charms and Muggle weapon... it's a bit complicated, but I had plenty of time to think... nothing much to do in between the Cruciatus... it was death and dream of ways to kill him, and it didn't seem too productive."

If he thought cutting the nails was the hard part, he was proven wrong only moments later. "Jesus fucking Christ on a cross... appropriate too." He took a few breaths, and then shook his head. "No." He was sick and tired of magic that took his control away from him. "I'll be quiet."

Severus snorted. "He's capable of fighting without magic. He's an adept swordsman and he can use his fists. He doesn't discard knowledge that may be useful." He paused but decided not to mention where they were going. He needed Stephen to obey, not try anything stupid that would get them both discovered.

"Intriguing," he said absently as he pulled out four vials that he would need once he was done and placed them on the floor beside him. "I suspect it may need some refining once we discover how Rodolphus responds to your removal."

He removed the first of the nails when Stephen didn't respond then nodded once when the man refused the silencing charm. He just hoped Stephen could keep his promise. He removed the nails smoothly and quickly, sending them skittering across the floor. The wounds immediately started bleeding but he would deal with that later.

Once he had gotten the last nail out, he picked up the first vial and flicked the seal off. He then raised Stephen's head and placed the vial to his lips. "You will need to drink all of these. This is a more potent pain-killer. The second is a healing potion; it won't heal everything but it will do enough to get you out. The next will be a blood-replenishing potion. The last is a mild stimulant. Don't let the action of the stimulant fool you. I'm using it because I need you relatively alert and coherent as we get out of here."

Stephen didn't mention that he didn't want any swords, he wanted fists, and he was pretty sure that he would leave an impression, hopefully of his knuckles on the man's face, but there was no point in arguing. It took too much energy and it was a impossibility anyway.

"You'll like it. It's complicated and sneaky... but it requires lots of people. You won't like that-" The rest of cut off when he felt Snape's hands on him. He took another breath, knowing that he couldn't talk or he'd scream. Instead he clenched his jaw, biting the inside of his cheek so hard he tasted blood. The pain built again despite the potions, by the time Snape was done, Stephen was barely conscious.

He listen to Snape talk, but he was once again to the point where he didn't care what Snape was feeding him. "You want me lucid, got it, not so easy to do." He swallowed obediently when Snape brought them to his lips. The potions had all one thing in common: they tasted horribly. "You find a way to make them taste decent, and then you're a real genius in the field." He fought the need to go to sleep. "So... we get out now?"

"Find a way to reduce the number of people involved for a start," Severus replied, knowing that concentrating on something other than his injuries and the pain would help Stephen. "People like to talk and Rodolphus has many people who are listening."

Severus knew the stimulant would kick in soon enough and he wanted to get as much of his next task done as he could before that happened.

"Not just yet," he said and he rested one hand on Stephen's chest, trying to avoid the wounds as much as he could. "I need to ensure the wards don't alert when you leave. I couldn't glean too much from the remaining manor wards without alerting Rodolphus but I believe he has those that are left on a higher alert. Now lie still and don't disturb my concentration."

He closed his eyes then slowly began to expand the shield around Stephen. He was relieved to see that it was no more difficult than when he had tried it on inanimate objects. It took less time than he expected to complete the shield around Stephen then he opened his eyes. He could feel the strain it was putting on his magic though and he grimaced and hoped their exit would be as smooth as his entrance.

He reached over and pulled his cloak towards them, throwing it over one shoulder for now. "I'm going to levitate you into an upright position," he said. "I think it will be far easier on those wounds."

He gave a flick of his wand and did just that, keeping the spell going for a moment once Stephen was upright. He quickly wrapped his cloak around Stephen and pulled the hood over his head to conceal his face. He then wrapped an arm around Stephen to keep him upright and ended the spell. He didn't need the drain on his magic right now.

"Let me take as much of your weight as possible. Simply concentrate on placing one foot in front of the other."

"Can't do it. It's got to be a full blow attack, areal with bombs. You wouldn't be able to target anything, but if you drop enough bombs, you'll be able to cause a lot of damage and bring the fight to them for once." Stephen knew that he wasn't making much sense, but he really did have a plan, which needed to be perfected, but it was still a plan.

Stephen thought that lying back and not disturb Snape was the best idea the man had had since arriving. Not moving was very easy because even the smallest movement made him want to scream in pain. If Snape expected him to argue or fight, he was going to be disappointed. At the next direction, Stephen nodded. "Okay, levitate away."

Again, he needed to prepare himself, because screaming the place down wouldn't help either one of them. He sagged when the spell ended, and only Snape's support kept him upright. "One foot in front of the other... I think I can do that." They began to move excruciatingly slowly, excruciatingly both because he wanted to get out of there and because the pain was surreal. Another step and another, and then Snape stopped. Stephen looked up wondering what was happening now, and knowing that he wouldn't be able to run. "Leave," he said softly.

Severus was silent for a moment. "I could almost swear you've been spending too much time with Aberforth and Xiomara," he said with amusement. "You seem to be as bloody minded as they are."

Not that he objected to the idea of obliterating Upper Slaughter but he could also foresee many problems. Now, however, was not the time to discuss them.

Their movement up from the dungeons and through the manor was incredibly slow but Severus schooled himself to patience. Stephen could not be pushed too much right now or he'd pass out and he absoutely did not want to deal with the dead weight of an unconscious man.

He suddenly heard noises from further down the corridor and came to a halt, glancing around for a hiding place. "Don't be an imbecile," he whispered back sharply then he found what he was looking for - a niche that held a large decorative vase. He quickly levitated the vase out of the way then hustled Stephen into the niche, placing a hand over his mouth to silence any noise.

Once in the niche he levitated the vase back into place, leaving them not a great deal of room. he manhandled Stephen into the corner then protected him with his body. He closed his eyes and concentrated on increasing the strength of the shield around him. He was fairly certain it was house elves approaching and they were likely to notice them, even tucked awy in here. But they were also not likely to do or say anything if they sensed the Dark Lord's magic.

He heard sounds getting closer and was able to confirm that they were house elves. He winced when they stopped in front of the vase and started whispering urgently to each other then he felt the touch of house elf magic against the shield.

One of the house elves squeaked in alarm and jabbered away to its companion in fright, sending the other one into high-pitched hysterics as well. Then the first insisted that they return to the kitchen and a moment later all noise disappeared. Severus gave a sigh of relief then eased the shield down to the level it had originally been at.

He got them out of the niche and out of the house as quickly as possible, wincing again at the bizarre feeling of crossing the wards. The moment he was past them, he murmured the location of Johnstone Manor to Stephen and apparated them both there. He arrived in the foyer then touched the wards to find out where the others were. He then apparated straight into the bedroom where he knew Draco was.

"Take him," he said harshly as he took down the shield surrounding them and felt his knees buckle a little from his use of magic tonight.

"Must be a ravenclaw thing," Stephen answered. It probably was. Give a Ravenclaw enough motivation, and he would find a way to do what he wanted, and in this case they wanted to destroy this town.

The thought disappeared when Snape pushed him into the niche, or at least it felt like he'd been pushed. The pain of being moved too quickly cut through him, and he probably would have screamed if Snape hadn't put his hand on his mouth.

"Who would have thought we'd be here?" he said when they started moving again. The pain of walking though was nothing as what he felt when they Apparated out of there, and he could barely stand when they arrived wherever they were supposed to go, hopefully the manor.

Adrian's head whipped around when he heard the crack of Apparition and his mouth went dry at the sight of Stephen. He could ignore the blood for the moment and the fact that he looked like it wouldn't be long before he passed out because he was alive and that's really all that mattered to Adrian at the moment.

The relief was almost overwhelming.

He was standing in front of him before he could remember moving but he didn't touch him, not sure if he'd be doing more harm than good with all of the blood. "I- God, I thought I'd lost you. I couldn't feel you," he murmured, reaching up to cup Stephen's face with both hands. "I love you."

Draco rolled his eyes. Leave it to Pucey to do the stupid thing and ignore the fact that both men needed help. He went to Severus's side, putting a hand around him. "Let's get you to a chair."

He really didn't know how Pucey could be a Slytherin and not think when it was important. He dismissed everything, and concentrated on Severus. "Do you need anything? What can I get you?"

Severus ignored the byplay between Stephen and Adrian and surrendered Stephen to William. He let himself collapse against Draco a little and rested his forehead on his shoulder.

"Bed would be better," he murmured. "If I sit down, I doubt I'm going to get up again."

He drew in a deep breath and gathered his strength a little. "Sleep is all I need. Just tired, used a lot of magic."

"Bed it is," Draco said softly, before turning to William. "You can send the house elf to let Evelyn know. Good night, everyone."

He looked at Severus. "I'll take you upstairs." Without waiting for more he Apparated to Severus's room, helping his lover to the bed. "You're amazing," he said. "you didn't have to do any of that, and you did. You're a much better man than I'll have be."

Severus closed his eyes as Draco apparated them to his room then forced them open again. He could fall asleep in bed, doing so standing up just ended up being painful.

He shook his head as he used wordless magic to strip off his robes. There was blood on them but Titchy would take care of that far better than he could.

"I have a philosophical objection to leaving people in Rodolphus' hands," he said, his voice coming perilously close to slurring as he crawled into bed. "Especially people like Stephen who are too damn naive when it comes to Slytherin ways."

He relaxed with a groan then swore as he remembered something. "Need to find out if Rodolphus used Legilimency on him and what he told Rodolphus." He had no intention of doing anything now though; he doubted he could make himself move.

"I have a philosophical objection to get myself killed," Draco said, while he took his robe off. He get into bed, knowing that Tracey wouldn't wait, not when he'd left a message that he was leaving for business.

"We'll ask him tomorrow. He's too incoherent to tell you anything, and besides, knowing now won't change anything." He turned the torches off and got into bed. He rested his head on Severus's shoulder. "If he did, then he'll know about me. I'll have to talk to Mother, tighten up everything at the Manor. She can't be allowed to roam free, even if only in part of the house." He sighed. "I guess I'll worry about it tomorrow." He raised his head and kissed Severus's jaw. "Good night."

"Hmmm, that's fine," Severus replied, uncaring for the moment. The Fidelius would protect them and that was all that mattered for now.

He closed his eyes and listened as Draco got into bed then wrapped his arms around his lover. He knew Titchy would keep an eye on Adrian and the Cornfoots and wake either him or Draco if they were needed. The last bit of tension flowed out of him and he slid into sleep as he felt Draco kiss his jaw.
