RP: Information
Date: 2 June 2005
Characters: Romilda Vane, Theo Nott
Location: The secret room somewhere
Private/Public: Private
Rating: PG
Warnings: None
Summary: Romilda keeps Theo up to date on what she's overheard
Completion: Complete

Romilda had been summoned to see Theo. She had already been thinking of contacting him. The dinner with Antonin and Rodolphus Lestrange had been rather interesting, even if she didn't have anything substantial to tell him. But she doubted that Lestrange would be gossiping about his plans in public anyway.

The portkey transported her into the same room as before, and after a second she looked up to see Theo there already. "Theo," she said softly, "I have some interesting information for you."

Theo hadn't been waiting long, Romilda answering his summons as punctually as always. He had no real need to talk to her, but there was the information about the Auror - and the matter of telling her not to contact him while he was away.

He would not interrupt his honeymoon for anyone - especially not Romilda Vane.

He was just about to speak, when she did, and in the light of what she said, he stayed quiet for now, gesturing toward a chair while taking his own seat.

'Tell me,' he said simply.

She took the seat offered and started quickly. She knew better than to waste Theo's time.

"I was having dinner in London with Antonin Dolohov. He's been... helping with Liam's fire starting abilities." She felt she needed to explain how she knew Dolohov.

"Rodolphus Lestrange joined us. Right there in public, in the al'Nasir club in London. I... don't know if he was using any sort of a disguise, but he introduced himself with his name, and didn't appear to hide who he was."

Now that was interesting indeed - though not at all in the way Romilda seemed to think.

'So let me see if I get you straight. You were having dinner with a former Death Eater - and managed to run into the leader of the Death Eaters...in public? And he wasn't hiding? My, my, you do lead an interesting life,' he said, feigning a bit of a shock at Rodolphus' name. Not too much, she'd see through that, but just enough for her not to draw any conclusions. It was better if Romilda never knew that he was quite close to Rodolphus. He had a feeling she wouldn't offer him information quite so freely if she did.

'Of course as someone who is supposed to protect you I would advice to you to be more careful with whom you see, but as someone who wants information I'll say keep on going.'

'Now tell me the rest, what did they talk about, for how long, was there anything you found odd - other than the situation as such.'

Romilda knew she had definitely delivered something startling to Theo. He was good at hiding his reactions, but the fact he wanted her to clarify it detail for detail was a give-away.

"As I said, Antonin offered to help train Liam with his fire starting abilities. During our lessons, we learned that I have some skill with elemental fire magic." She knew Theo wasn't interested in about her, but gave him the information for context.

"We discovered there is some sort of familial connection there, and he invited me along to dinner at the club as his guest. I have no idea if he was expecting Lestrange or not."

"But Lestrange came by as we were finishing the main course. They spoke of Antonin's defection, and they had a bit of a disagreement about when he was coming back to the Death Eaters. It seemed they both had a gaping difference of opinion on that."

"And Rodolphus already knew a little about my son, and his father. He... flirted with me, and confirmed in casual conversation that Miles was a Death Eater." She didn't really want to tell Theo that she had enjoyed the flirting. "He stayed until after dessert, but they stopped arguing when they realised they might give away any plans. Antonin asked him outright about his plans, but Lestrange kept his mouth closed. But even so, he admitted he had plans he was keeping quiet about."

"I had no intention of spending more time with Death Eaters than I should, but it seems I have been surrounded by more than my fair share." She was talking about Miles, Millicent, and even Lestrange.

Disagreement? Theo was quite sure it was more than a disagreement, more like Rodolphus killing Dolohov if he didn't return, provided that he could of course.

'So Rodolphus is planning something?' he said feigning interest. He knew Rodolphus was planning things. He always was - and at least one of those plans undoubtedly involved the Shack. Not that it was important for him, luckily he'd be out of the country soon enough.

'That is interesting,' he lied, frownig as in deep thought. He didn't care that she'd flirted with him, though he did think it showed exceptionally bad judgment on her part, but it was her life, and she could live it as she wanted.

'If you're surrounded by them it's because you chose to be, Romilda,' he said, waiving away her words. 'It's only up to you, though some may be more stupid choices than others. Miles Bletchley comes to mind as one of the more tremendously stupid choices.

'Now if you do spend more time around Death Eaters, make sure to pay attention,' he said firmly. 'Collect it in a pensive if you think you're likely to forget, as you won't be able to contact me for a while.'

He paused when he saw the surprise on her face.

'I am getting married, Romilda. With weddings comes honeymoons. You're not under any circumstances to contact me on my honeymoon, is that clear? Only if your life is in immediate danger may you do so, but then again, I will not be able to protect you from the other side of the world, just so you know that.'

"He did personally invite me back to dine at the club with him again," she added, remembering that small detail. "He did mention that his ahh... wife... wasn't fond of visiting there."

Romilda wanted to argue about how she chose to surround herself with Death Eaters. "Well I never consciously chose to," she finally retorted, knowing that no matter what, she was best friends with one. "And I know Anthony isn't one, that I'm certain of."

She was surprised when he said he would be going away, but nodded when he mentioned the wedding. "I understand," she said with enough meekness in her voice, nodding. She doubted anyone would want to be interrupted at that time of their life.

"If I find out anything urgent, is there someone I should contact in your stead?"

He didn't comment on her invitation. If he had been her, he'd not gone, but then he would not tell her that and risk Rodolphus finding out.

Nor did he bother to argue what she knew and didn't and who she surrounded herself with. It was none of his consern, and the more people she surrounded herself with the better for him.

He did however, ponder her question rather carefully. In the end it depended quite a lot on what she found out, didn't it? And wich side needed the information... but if Rodolphus was planning something, and it was urgent... well it would most likely be information that McGonagall would need.

'Millicent knows about us, yes?' he asked, though he of course knew the anser. 'Tell her and if she thinks it's important she'll bring it to Draco.'

As stupid as her actions sometimes were, Millicent had better instincts when it came to things like this than most thought, and it was natural for her to tell Draco. If it was urgent, Draco would bring it to McGonagall. Of that Theo was sure.

She could see him carefully considering her question. "Yes, Millicent knows," she replied quietly.

His answer made sense. "I'll make sure to pass it on if it has any sense of urgency."

"I don't have anything else, but if you want me to see if I can get any further information from Rodolphus, I will."

She said nothing about his upcoming wedding, knowing it was no place of hers to say anything. "Oh," she said, nearly forgetting. "He did touch my choker, and drew back quickly," she said, thinking it wasn't important.

So Rodolphus knew she was his then...he couldn't decide if that was a good or bad thing at the moment. Then again, she was one of the few contacts he'd mentioned by name. It could of course help to keep her safe...since she was already 'on their side' so to speak.

It could also mean he wanted her to be in contact with him rather than Theo - but if that was the case then so be it.

'Don't get yourself in danger, and don't ask questions. Listen and pay attention and if he offers information then remember it. Never ask for it.'

He'd leave it at that, and let her make up her mind. She'd never resist legilimancy, so it was better he didn't say too much. This could easily be explained away.

He stood up, preparing for her to leave, then almost as an afterthought turned to her again. 'The Auror is being handled, by the way. He should not be out on the streets for long, though I have been asked if you'd want to testify to what he did. No one knows who you are right now, and if you prefer to keep it that way they'll make do with something else.'

He waited for her answer, hoping she would make up her mind quickly. He wasn't in the mood for staying longer, nor did he have the time.

Romilda didn't plan to get herself into danger. These situations just seemed to come to her. She didn't really need to have Theo tell her not to get involved. But then again, she felt it would have been suicidal to turn down an offer of dinner with Rodolphus Lestrange.

And despite what Theo might think, she wasn't daft enough to go fishing for information from the leader of the Death Eaters. She would take whatever tidbits he would throw her way. "I'll remember what I can, and if I need to give you the memory, I will." That was the best she could offer.

She was halfway out of her chair, realising Theo had ended the meeting, when he spoke of the Auror who had assaulted her. She really didn't want to testify, and was not comfortable in doing so. "No, I don't want to," she said quickly. "It would... affect more than just me."

She grabbed the portkey, waiting for him to set it to send her home. She gave him one glance, realising now that he would be married the next time they met. It still seemed... odd, but then again, she had a boyfriend now, and that still seemed incredible enough. Perhaps all their lives were changing.

Theo simply nodded at her refusal, neither wanting nor caring to persuade her otherwise. Instead he walked up to her, touching the portkey with his wand and muttered the spell to activate it.

He did not say goodbye, nor made any attempt at calming her nerves. There was no need. Instead he summoned his own portkey, activating it and feeling the pull behind his navel before finding himself in his study once more.

So Rodolphus was flirting with Romilda...sometimes the world really was odd.
