Romilda woke feeling just a little queasy. Nothing too much to worry about, but she had been tired and sluggish all week. It seemed to be taking longer every morning just to get herself up and out of bed. Even Liam bouncing on her bed wasn't rousing her as quickly. She finally managed to get Liam dressed and fed, but still needed to get through her own morning routine.
As Liam happily raced in next door to play with Ella and Millicent, she took her time. The shower felt wonderful, and she wished she could have stayed under it all day. She seemed to take an inordinately long time just to do anything, her mind wandering at the slightest thought. As she opened the medicine cabinet to get to her new toothbrush, she pushed aside a potion bottle, accidentally knocking it to the floor. The glass jar broke with a resounding crack, and she swore loudly.
Grabbing her wand, she quickly cleared away the mess, getting back to scrubbing her teeth. As she banished the broken vial, she recognised the potion. Her contraceptive potion. The one Anthony made - well, used to make - for her.
As she scrubbed her teeth, she realised now that was something else she had to arrange with someone else. Not that it mattered any more now that she wasn't having sex with anyone. Well, Rodolphus Lestrange, but that had been only the one time. Her brain was ticking over as she planned to get another potion, working out when she was going to need to take it. She frowned, and stopped scrubbing her teeth to think. The last time she remembered taking it was... May.
For the life of her, she couldn't remember taking one any later than that, and then it suddenly came to her. The one she just broken had been her June dose. Which meant she hadn't been covered at all the past month. Letting out a sigh of relief as she realised she had been covered the last time she'd been with Anthony, her mind wandered again. Something still wasn't right. A slight tingle of nausea washed over her as she spat in the sink. Her period.
All the dominoes fell at that moment, and she felt the rush of blood thrumming across her ears. She had slept with Rodolphus after her last contraceptive potion, and her period was late. Late -- as in over two weeks late. She was never late. She could set a watch to the timing of her periods.
Fuck!
Grabbing one side of the sink with one hand, she scrabbled for her wand, nervously pointing it at herself. All the girls in her business knew the spell to check for pregnancy, and she could cast it with ease. She had to wait one minute for the result to show, and it was always an interminably long minute. She closed her eyes, hoping against all hope that there wasn't going to be a blue glow at the end of her wand. When she opened her eyes, she looked down, and as she suspected, the tip of her wand glowed blue against her belly.
She needed to sit down, and the edge of the bathtub was the nearest place, not noticing that she had knocked the tap in the sink, and the water began to spill all over the edges and over the floor. She didn't notice at all. She was too busy wondering just what the fuck she was going to do now. She was pregnant (again), only this time it wasn't just any Death Eater. This was Rodolphus Lestrange's baby.
*******
An hour later she had mopped up the mess on the floor and owled Rosie to tell her she wasn't coming in. She truly wasn't feeling well. The bile in her throat rose at the thought of being pregnant again. But the real dilemma was just how was she going to explain it. And who should she tell? Her instinct to race in and tell Millicent was strong. But then that would lead to the inevitable question about the baby's father, and she doubted Millicent would be happy about the answer to that question.
She had to talk to Rodolphus. He would know what to do. It was the only logical solution. She had made a mistake keeping Liam away from Miles, but then again, he had been a prick and would have likely told her she was stupid. Rodolphus had been nothing but kind and loving and caring, even going so far as to offer her his protection. She owed it to him to tell him.
But a half hour later, she was still staring at a blank parchment. She realised this was far too important to trust to an owl, and she finally resorted to asking him to meet. That seemed the right thing to do.
Dear Rodolphus,
I know it has been a while since we last met or spoke, but I really do need to see you.
Something has happened, and I need to talk to you about it. I don't believe it can wait, but I would like to meet with you at your earliest convenience.
If that could be today, it would be greatly appreciated. But if you are really busy, I will understand. The world does not revolve around one witch and her worries.
Regards Romilda Vane.
With the quill still in her hand, she realised she should also write to Anthony. She had been putting it off for weeks now, and even after both Colin and Dennis had told her to let him cool his heels, she knew that she had to tell him. Even after their very uncomfortable little meeting at Antonin's - she had to tell him.
He would hate her even more if he found out about it from someone else. She remembered the guilt he had suffered over Penny's baby, and cringed. It would break his heart all over again.
Fuck. How was she going to explain it? She had to see him. This was likely to change everything. Finally plucking up the courage, she wrote.
Dear Anthony,
I should have written to you much earlier. I am a stupid fool, and I admit it. We really do need to talk. We need to talk and Liam misses you so much. I know it's your day off tomorrow. Are you free to come around and meet with me after work? I have a lot of things I've been thinking about, and they need to be said face to face.
Please say you'll come.
Romy.
